We're humans, we judge, it's what we do. We begin at preschool when we see different children – the rich, the poor, the shy, aggressive, silly, clever or kind; it's all part of dealing with peers and the pecking order. And that continues through high school, work, and these days it's rampant in social media. We are encouraged to judge – we watch shows like NZ’s Got Talent and celebrate the gifted and cringe at the deluded. We judge people on their clothes, their hair, how they speak, their occupations, Angela Bennett, Editor their parenting, even their possessions. Many of us sterotype others due to race. And while it's essential that we do judge and evaluate people and situations in order to survive in this world, some of our judgments can be counterproductive –ending up being erroneous, or bringing out the worst in ourselves. Sometimes judgements we make can take us by surprise. We believe we are tolerant and fair minded but suddenly an unsubstantiated thought can leave us thinking 'whoa, where did that come from?' Thankfully we can blame our brains for our shortcomings. Research reported in Women's Health magazine has found that the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure in the brain, detects threats in the environment and responds in milliseconds – before you have a chance to fully process a person or situation. This is our snapjudgement that activates our sometimes unconscious attitudes. It once ensured our survival, protecting us from outsiders who didn't act like us and were rivals to our food, shelter or necessities. It's the primitive machinery of the subcortex that still kicks into high gear today vigilantly detecting Us versus Them and automatically treating Them as a threat. But before you lose faith in our ability to transcend the primitive parts of our brain and be increasingly civilised and tolerant, researchers have also found that our brains are also hardwired for egalitarianism. That same command centre is also designed for cooperation and fairness. David Amodio, PhD, an associate professor of psychology and neural science at New York University was reported in Women's Health magazine as saying that at some point in our evolution, we developed an entirely new brain structure called the neocortex – what researchers refer to as the “higher mind” – which works to fine tune behaviour and override initial impulses. This 'filter' takes the first automatic response that pops into our heads and translates it into a more socially or morally acceptable reaction. “People are really good at controlling their actions, but they're really bad at controlling their thoughts and emotions,” says Amodio. It's an interesting point to keep in mind. How we jump to conclusions and can judge others unfairly is humorously highlighted in the “Don't Judge Too Quickly” ad campaign that was created around 2005 in the US. There's a series you can see on YouTube but here's one example to give you an idea: “A guy's preparing a beautiful dinner for a romantic evening. Just as he's cutting up the meat, the cat jumps on to the stove and knocks over the saucepan. There's red sauce all over the floor, and the cat. Still holding the knife in one hand he picks up the cat by its scruff in the other. At this very moment the love interest opens the door…” Next time I feel like I'm being quick to judge I'm going to take five and give my neocortex just a little more time to compute.

Tony Brooks is the founder of the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force (SURF) which aims to rejuvenate New Brighton's business district, using corporate sponsorship and public donations to attract investment in the earthquake-damaged area. I caught up with Tony to find out a little more about the man behind this initiative and how such a huge challenge can be achieved… What is the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force (SURF)? SURF is a private company that was formed to enable a series of key projects that have been designed to rejuvenate both the CBD of New Brighton and surrounding suburb. It will tackle a mix of social projects and business propositions with the view to attracting investment and business to the area. What led you to initiating SURF? I sat on the board of the New Brighton Business and Land Owners Association before leaving to establish SURF. In my time with the board, we uncovered the need for a company/organisation to step into the mix to enable the planned projects we were investigating. It is as the result of identifying this need that SURF came to fruition. How much do you hope SURF will raise? We don't have a predetermined target in mind. We will ensure that we use any funds raised to maximum benefit. However, we know what we can achieve with 500k. We also know what is possible with $2 million. What are the key projects you hope to achieve?

He has lived in the area, he is the owner of New Brighton's Pierside Café and Bar, and he has proud memories of New Brighton when it was one of our city's greatest natural assets. The time when it boasted plenty of safe walkways, a popular beach, parks, dining and shopping, all enveloped by a buzzy seaside ambience. He wants that kind of era back – a New Brighton that welcomes and once again provides Cantabrians with an anchor for recreation.
It should be the place where all Christchurch residents come to relax and play.
Tony Brooks We want to upgrade and introduce significant security measures to the area. Cameras, security patrols and initiatives in conjunction with Police. We don't want to stop at simply introducing security solutions. We want to make it one of the safest areas in Christchurch. We are looking at options like covering The Mall and remodelling to support a robust hospitality precinct. We want to invest in a series of market spaces including a Boat Shed Market with 16 plus retailers, an Asian themed market with food stalls, entertainment and retail products and a Black Market which is high street products at affordable prices. We have key investor projects planned such as Wavegarden, which is an artificial wave facility producing perfect 6ft waves every 60 seconds, perfect for surfers of all levels. This project shows impressive returns on investment and would quickly become one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.
Is the council involved? The council has had no involvement with the design or establishment of SURF. We are a private company so unlike community groups, we don't rely on a council funding pool to operate. We will approach council when we need their assistance, and there will be many occasions when we do, but we have no plans at this stage to involve them in the development stages.
How important is it to engage the community? In short, it's vital. If we don't get the support of the community we don't have projects. If we don't have projects we don't have a rebuild. So the most important focus of this entire campaign is to both engage the public, whilst providing them with the opportunity to contribute to the decisions.
What is your vision for the new “soul” or “buzz” of New Brighton? Different. Niche. Funky. Affordable and cool. We are aiming to promote the natural assets in the area also which includes surfing, beaches, mountain biking, running, wind surfing, swimming, waka ama, canoeing etc. It should be the place where all Christchurch residents come to relax and play.
How will you get the residents and business owners in New Brighton involved and committed to this initiative? They are already thirsty for change and progress so getting their support is relatively simple. Getting them to action that support is a bit different, however, we are confident that, that support will transfer into action once they see the projects, the marketing campaigns and the hard work that has gone into creating this vehicle for them.
On a more personal note: what is your proudest achievement? Getting SURF to where it is now. I have a list of proud achievements in my life across sport and a professional career but this, to date, has been the most satisfying. I am relishing being able to apply my sales and marketing experience to do good, instead of just making money for large corporations.

There is a current preconception from the city about New Brighton how do you believe you can change this? It starts with making the area safe again by introducing the proposed security measures. We then introduce the various retail options giving life and energy to the business district and then we implement the key investor projects, almost like the cherry on top. This progression from slum to funky suburb will generate its own positive marketing and hence should change the perception of the area.
Personally, what is one thing you would like to see in the 'new' New Brighton? Wavegarden is my personal favourite. I am very much looking forward to implementing this project. That would represent the pinnacle of my professional career. What's next on the wish list? A holiday. Hahaha. I wish.

The countdown is on for Warren Miller's Ticket to Ride feature film splashing across the big screens. The New Zealand tour has been launched in Auckland and comes to Christchurch on Friday 23 and Sunday 25 May in Hollywood 3. Warren Miller's Ticket to Ride will take viewers on an action-packed journey with the world's best skiers and snowboarders. This newest instalment of the legendary film series take ski and snowboard fans on an adrenalin journey to some of the most exotic and sought-after destinations in the world, including the Alaskan Tordrillos, Iceland's Troll Peninsula, the fjords of Greenland and expansive Big Sky country of Montana. The movie features world class sports athletes as diverse as the terrain, including World Cup champions and Olympians Seth Wescott, Ted Ligety and Julia Mancuso, plus legendary ski mountaineers like Chris Davenport and freeskiers Colby James West and Sean Pettit. Snow action on Punk Flute Ninja & orchestra plan tour the big screen A University of Canterbury music graduate and one of New Zealand's most acclaimed flautists Miho Wada will undertake several major tours with her small jazz orchestra later this year and in 2015. Wada and her jazz orchestra will perform later this year in Japan and Canada and next year in the United Kingdom and the United States. They have been busy performing and recording non-stop for the last six months and have just released their third jazz album Mystery Banana which started with recording in Tokyo while on tour last year. Wada, known as the Punk Flute Ninja, said her years studying music at the University of Canterbury was the perfect place from which to launch her career. Her Canterbury music lecturer and principal flute of the Christchurch Symphony, Tony Ferner, says he always Miho Wada and her small jazz orchestra
felt Wada would succeed as a career musician. “I recognised huge determination and knew her talents would culminate in something special. Miho was a model student who always positive about all things and easy to teach because she was good at taking in the concepts. “She took her opportunities with both hands and has created her own unique style of what she is. Miho was never afraid to try anything.” Wada has performed internationally with artists such as Nigel Kennedy, Iggy Pop and members of the Buena Vista Social Club. Wada was spotted by renowned violinist Kennedy at the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London and she later performed jazz trio concerts with him.

Battle of the Rebuild smashes record Battle of the Rebuild has raised nearly quarter of a million dollars for Christchurch causes. Sixteen contenders from the building and construction industry, and two professionals, put their bodies on the line for the charity boxing event at CBS Canterbury Arena recently. Fundraising efforts topped $240,000, surpassing the $203,000 raised at last year's Fight For Christchurch event. The charities receiving the funds are the Aranui and Linwood College Breakfast Club, the Champion Centre, and Canterbury Youth Development Programme Trust (CYDP). Battle of the Rebuild is the brainchild of Christchurch event management company Enth Degree, whose hugely-successful Fight for Christchurch events have now raised more than $790,000 for local charities since 2010. About 2800 vociferous guests attended the black-tie event. With a red carpet entrance complete with paparazzi, celebrity guests and spectacular entertainment, Battle of the Rebuild had all the glitz and glamour of a top Las Vegas fight night. Battle of the Rebuild will be screened on CTV on May 17 and 18.

SomeBody at the Bryce Somebody, the latest exhibition at Bryce Gallery has been celebrated as “the most beautiful ever”. Denise Bryce handpicked the group of 14 local and North Island artists with a focus on ‘face, figure or form’ featuring people paintings – at play, portraiture, nudes etc. The invitational group worked across a range of genres from watercolours to oils in abstract to photo realism; all were of a very high calibre ranging in price from $500 to $12,000.

Meet artist & intrepid traveller Min Kim
M
in Kim has two passions – painting and travelling – and has combined the two for most of her professional life as an artist. Be it Italy, Morocco or New Zealand, through her distinct, highly detailed style, and using the appropriate colours of the many countries she has visited, Min manages to capture the character of these places and their people. Entitled Traveller, the latest exhibition of her work, which consists of paintings she has just completed, is now on at the Bryce Gallery, at the corner of Riccarton Road and Paeroa Street. Born in South Korea, Min first visited New Zealand in 1998 as a backpacker, travelling overland for 45 days from Cape Reinga at the top, right down to Dunedin. “I immediately fell in love with New Zealand. I had already travelled in many other countries but felt closely connected to New Zealand and decided to immigrate here,” says Min. “I settled in Christchurch in 1999. I loved the lifestyle – the people, the gardens, everything.” Min had already obtained a degree in fine arts, focusing on oil painting, at the University of Korea, and went on in 2007 to study for three years in Florence, Italy. “I went to live and learn there – absorbing everything. I also fell in love with Florence and have been back almost every year. It's a special town, but not just for me – all artists love Florence. It's a city with a different energy for artists,” says Min. Min's classical impressionist style was particularly suited to the buildings of Florence,

Min Kim in Morocco Min describes classical impressionism as a 19th-century style, between classical and modern. Using this, painters of that time created art with classical skill and modern passion. “The classical style was used to re-create history with no personal expression. Impressionism has a strong foundation of classical skills – with beautiful detail and depth – but it is done with a wider, instinctive brushstroke,” she says. Min never ceases moving on and her current exhibition takes a slightly different approach – less classical in style, with much of the work done with a palette knife, thus giving it more texture. “It's not photographic in style. A palette knife gives a magical depth and lots of layers. You never finish at one layer,” says Kim. Colour is also very important. “For my New Zealand work, my palette was more autumn colours, with earth browns and greens. But my visits to Turkey and Morocco gave me a different sense of colour – the culture and even the food gave me a different impression,” says Min. “After visiting these countries, I use more ocean blue – turquoise, deep green and deep blue.” You may also be interested to see what colours she chooses for Paris, New York and Chicago…

Google Now is getting a new superpower: it's going to be able to remember where you parked. Using your phone's sensors, it'll figure out when you've exited a moving vehicle and remember your car's location automatically, so you don't even have to think twice. Canterbury Collections wowed the crowd
T
he Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week 'Canterbury Collections' flagship event was quite simply a world class fashion show.
Twenty-six leading fashion designers and retailers showed their winter collections punctuated with outstanding and “never before seen in New Zealand” entertainment from the moment the guests walked in the doors of the stunning venue at The Tannery to the very end of the show. Founder and Director of CFBW Denyse Saunders said comments about the Black Tie event following the show were exciting. Some were: “We could have been anywhere in the world like Paris or Milan." "This is world class." "No one else in New Zealand does such outstanding fashion events." "I am booking two tables next time." Canterbury PhD model on US Today Show
University of Canterbury postgraduate student Dr Nicole Kleinstreuer appeared on NBC News' Today Show in the United States recently for being one of a number of PhD students from around the world to feature in a modelling campaign. Dr Kleinstreuer, who graduated from Canterbury with a doctorate in bioengineering, says she was approached by design company Betabrand to participate in their PhD modelling campaign. The Today Show, a national morning show in the United States, filmed the campaign's photo shoot and the segment aired on the show recently as part of a series of stories on redefining beauty. “I was interviewed by Jenna Bush (George W. Bush's daughter), who is a correspondent for The Today Show. She was lovely, very down to earth and easy to talk to, perhaps a little to my surprise,” Dr Kleinstreuer says. “While working as a model earlier, I was put off by the amount of anti-intellectualism in the industry. It's almost as if models are expected to be stupid and you are viewed with extreme suspicion if you choose not to conform to that stereotype. “I think society's concept of beauty is pretty limited, and could certainly use a redefinition to encompass much more of the self than just the surface. “My PhD research was in the Centre for Bioengineering at the University of Canterbury and I focused on mathematical modelling and looked at mechanisms by which the kidney maintains balance in the body. “The mathematical models we developed
could someday help to inform control devices for artificial kidneys. It is great to be academic but to also engage with every day activities. While I was at Canterbury, I also taught salsa to many other students.” Dr Kleinstreuer did her postdoctoral training with the United States Environmental Protection Agency which is one of the most critical federal regulatory agencies in the world, and set limits for air emissions, chemical use limits such as pesticides, drinking water quality and a whole range of other standards to protect human health and the environment. “I miss Christchurch and the University of Canterbury enormously. During the visits I've made back since then the earthquakes, it has been heart-warming to see how strong Cantabrians are and how much progress is being made to the rebuild. “The spirit of the University of Canterbury cannot be shaken by any natural disaster. There is resilience and a camaraderie among all the students and staff that will always endure. “Students who complete the courses there will have a pretty amazing graduate profile, considering what Christchurch has gone through. I was able to get the best postdoctorate position I could have ever asked for coming straight out of my PhD at Canterbury.”

Short-term parking in the Central City has got cheaper with Council introducing lower meter rates in select areas. On-street short-term meter parking is now $2 per hour along sections of several inner city streets including Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford. The previous hourly meter rate was $3.10. The new charges cover both one and two-hour parking zones. The Council is also continuing to work with the Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) on a long-term citywide parking plan.

Parking prices Christchurch’s painting gift decrease in Central City Australian artist Denise Daffara and Californian Artist Kerry Lee visited Christchurch to teach one day “An Encounter with your Inspirational Muse” workshops recently. They are leaving the city with a gift of the painting they created and now welcome suggestions on which Women's Shelter or place of care for Women would be a fitting home. New Zealand born Denise has been an artist in Australia for 14 years and met Kerry Lee in California during their teacher training for the 'Color of Woman Method' in 2013. Kerry Lee was awarded a trip to New Zealand and was inspired to bring the Method across the seas. They are very pleased to have brought this inspirational offering to New Zealand for the first time and have been warmly received by The Drawing Room art supply store who sold out the first session in 48 hours.
The 'Color of Woman Method' is a style of painting developed by Shiloh Sophia McCloud and practiced for close to twenty years with thousands of students. The style involves a stepby-step method of creating a painting that allows anyone to paint an image drawing from
his or her internal imagery, symbol and story. The style of painting is referred to as Contemporary Symbolism and draws from the working style of Matisse, Frida Kahlo, Gustave Klimt, Chagall and Redon to name a few who used internal images as their source for creating art instead of only external images. The work also draws upon the research done by Carl Jung about how we can use our imagination to access and receive useful information from our unconscious selves. Pods under construction The much anticipated Pod worker accommodation is under construction with a completion date of late June 2014. A day back in primary school... It's really amazing what kids get to learn and do at primary school these days!

n early understanding of ecology and sustainability, and depicting this through art is the major project undertaken so far this year by the children of Room 1, Year 3, at Elmwood Normal School under the guidance of their teacher, Meg Feller. The first-term focus on environmental issues began with a virtual trip around New Zealand wetlands, presented to the children through class computers. This was followed by a real-life visit to the 116-hectare Travis Wetland Nature Heritage Park, located at the end of Beach Road, just inland from North Brighton, where the children were taken on a field trip by four park rangers.
They got to watch native birds with binoculars, scoop bugs out of the water and also began their understanding of the meaning of a food chain and the importance of conservation. A visit to Travis Wetland can be an eyeopener for people of all ages, and for these seven-year-old children it was a real adventure. Back at school, the next adventure was embarking on the systemic production of wonderful wetlands art, with the help of Lisa Bowden, the mother of one of the class pupils, Felix. Lisa helped in three sessions, instructing the class on the basic elements of landscape and wildlife drawing. The objective of the first session was to record the key elements of the landscape, by explaining just what makes it interesting: “Where is the horizon?”, “What colours do you see?”, “What is the main vegetation?”

Working with pastels on black paper, she taught the children to choose the appropriate colours to draw the outline of the landscape, from the foreground through the middleground to the background. During the second session, Lisa explained that art can have a message, asking the children what they wanted to share about the wetlands: “What did we learn?”, “With whom are we sharing our message?” She showed the class the work of New Zealand artist Nigel Brown, who incorporates
words around the border of his paintings, and suggested the children do the same. In the third session, Lisa got the children to present their work as a group, including 24 of the drawings, in three rows of eight, on a large mat measuring 2m by 1m. A border of words was created around the mat to convey the children's message. This is now on display in their classroom. Thanks to their teacher Meg Feller, who is also very technically advanced, photos of the children at work, plus Lisa working with them, can be found on their own website, http://room1elmwood.weebly.com/thearts.html Particularly impressive is the Travis Wetlands Movie, put together by Meg of photos taken by her of the children at the wetlands and working on their drawings. A constant rock and roll of humour
G
oing along to watch Billy Connolly for two hours is a riot – a constant rock and roll of humour that leaves you the next morning scratching your head to think of the jokes, and realising that they have come thick and fast and each one tumbles over the previous one. It is like working your way through an evening-long smorgasbord of delectable treats and then going back and trying to remember each individual taste. To an audience of something like 5,000 at the CBS Canterbury Arena recently on Anzac Day's evening, Billy was a treat. He began by mentioning his impression of post-earthquake Christchurch – not something many would see as a joke – but he managed his observation perfectly, saying that with all the changes, he didn't know where he was…and a lot of Christchurch people don't know where they are either! Well…that is true in more ways than one! A few of the jokes were old ones, but delivered with such great timing and contextual empathy, that they were funny all over again. Who could not fail to enjoy the story of the balaclava knitting – the one where the eyes were in the wrong place and caused him to squint, and the one that was knitted with earholes? The swearing was there, but the expletive-ridden monologue is now expected, and is an intrinsic part of the delivery – we are taken back to earth in many ways. In fact we are often made to look at reality anew. Why is it, for example, that whenever we look in a glovebox in a car, there is never a glove there? That is the work of a comedian – to make us look at ourselves with fresh eyes; to move us outside the square. Billy is looking, naturally enough, older. At 71 he

has been visiting New Zealand for forty years and clearly loves being here. But he has faced the twin afflictions of prostate cancer and Parkinson's and although there is always the potential to upset those who have some sort of close connection with these conditions, he is able, through his humour, to demonstrate how he has dealt with reality. Yes, Billy, we know about the shaking of the hands; but we really did not think about what a bad look putting those hands in our front trouser pockets would give! Rather than making him weary, his physiological difficulties seem to have given him fresh perspectives and new angles. The evening was a continual roll of laughter; the atmosphere one of appreciation, and the memories something to share. Billy may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he is a glimpse of gold in what can sometimes be a grey existence. Some gems of his to finish with? “The great thing about Glasgow is that if there's a nuclear attack, it'll look exactly the same afterwards.” And… “I don't know why I should have to learn Algebra… I am never likely to go there.” Or… “Marriage is a wonderful invention: then again, so is a bicycle repair kit.”

In the 1980s there was a spate of serious crimes in Christchurch and in other areas of New Zealand, and there was a strong move to deal with the issue and to create a more effective form of community policing. The result was the building of the Community Police Office in the Square, which was officially opened in 1986. The main objective of the office was, and still is, the maintenance of a link between the police and community. Volunteers deal with matters that do not require the attention of a police officer, such as lost and found property, giving directions and advice to tourists and the public, and directing them to various agencies if required. They are sometimes the first port of call for criminal matters, but these are either referred to police who are on duty in the building, or to the Central Police Station. The February 2011 earthquake caused the system havoc of course. Although police continued operating from the site, the kiosk was out of bounds for volunteers until they returned in November 2013. Police have a presence in the kiosk from 8am – 5pm on weekdays, and volunteers are on duty from 9am – 5pm seven days. Volunteer Coordinator Rod Burbery explained how volunteers are selected. “It is usually word of mouth or just a tap on the shoulder. Then there is an interview, an

application form is filled out and a police clearance check completed.” As can be expected, most volunteers are at least 60 years old. “It is an ideal occupation for a retiree who still wants to put something back into the community,” says Rod. “There are many other volunteer activities also: crime cameras, community watch, as well as the inquiry desk at the Central Police Station. One benefit volunteers have is that they are easy for many to approach. For some overseas visitors who may feel uneasy about someone in a uniform, a volunteer makes things more comfortable. There is an excellent rapport between the volunteers and the police, and within the volunteers themselves. Sandy Brunt was the original coordinator – was so for 20 years – and at 96 years is still interested and keeps in touch. Four volunteers from the original intake are still on deck. The occasional young person takes an interest in helping – usually wanting to get a practical introduction to the work of police as a career option. It is not always serious stuff though! Longtime volunteer Max Sword remembers a young man waiting for a bus, while sitting on a metal seat with holes near the kiosk. Bored,
he put a finger through a hole, and immediately found himself stuck fast. Max tried to extract his finger with the help of dishwashing detergent, but it was no use. So he called (much to the young gentleman’s embarrassment), the Fire Brigade, who clipped the seat and rescued him! They do a great job, those volunteers. Next time you walk past the kiosk, give them a wave!

Top ten tips for natural baby making

eeking medical advice for any health issue can be a daunting first step. For couples wanting to start a family it can also be difficult to know exactly when this help is needed.
Dr Janene Brown, Fertility Specialist at Genea Oxford Women's Health, says that it is well accepted that 12 months of trying without success, or six months if you are over 35 years, is an indication that things aren't working quite as they should be. Brown recommends a number of simple steps to enhance the chances of natural conception: 1. Don't leave it too late! Women are born with all their eggs and those eggs decline in both quantity and quality over time - the chance of a woman conceiving drops sharply from her late 30s. 2. Formulate a good diet and exercise routine. Women have a higher chance of conception when they are in a normal body mass index (BMI) range of between 18.5– 24.9.

t this time of the year we can be frozen and throwing on the merino one minute and stripping off to our base layers the next. My answer is trans-seasonal dressing, or layering. Wear at least two garments if not three so you can remove or add as the weather dictates (NIWA is predicting a warm winter by the way). It is best to keep the bottom layer sheer or lightweight so you don't roast when it warms up. Add a warm jersey and then a coat if necessary. The 'tights and a dress' combo is also a good option as it's not as snug as jeans but warmer than bare legs. A shoe or ankle boot completes the autumn look. Layering provides interest, keeps us modest and most importantly helps deal with our fickle climate.

In the Maori language, “kia kaha” means “staying strong”, and this is the positive message that Clare has set out to convey to both children and adult readers of her inspirational books.

his is the opening verse of “Kia Kaha's Brand New House”, the second children's book by Clare Erasmus about the experiences of a mouse that survived the Christchurch earthquakes and, through its extraordinary resilience, is now witness to the city's rebirth. In the Maori language, “kia kaha” means “staying strong”, and this is the positive message that Clare has set out to convey to both children and adult readers of her inspirational books. Published a year after the 2011 earthquake, the first book, “Kia Kaha, the Cathedral Mouse”, describes the destruction of Christchurch's most iconic building and then follows Kia Kaha as he realises the extent of the damage but also sees “how people went on with their lives and began to witness how a city survives!” In “Kia Kaha's Brand New House”, the mouse is excited to learn of the proposed erection of the Transitional Cathedral – better known as the Cardboard Cathedral. He checks out all aspects of this unusual building and moves in with his family: “Off he marched to his new

Kia Kaha, however, sees Japanese architect Shigeru Ban's plan for a temporary place to pray as “the best news today!” Through Kia Kaha's eyes, we look at the physical changes around town, the old and new landmarks. He talks about Latimer Square
and the nearby 185 white chairs placed together in memory of people who lost their lives. “Kia Kaha also realises that, morally, you must always say thank you to the people who have helped you,” says Clare. The second book was published just before the arrival in Christchurch of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their son, Prince George. Clare was given the opportunity to meet them and present them with a copy. “Prince William and Kate were really intrigued by the perseverance and community strength
of the people of Christchurch,” says Clare. “They were also delighted to receive the book for Prince George, They loved the mouse as the main character and talked about who should read the book to their son first.” A teacher at Cathedral Grammar School, which is also attended by her 10-year-old son, Joshua, and five-year-old daughter, Jessica, Clare has a strong relationship with the cathedral. veryone loves cake. And what is a special occasion without cake to celebrate? According to ancient Roman tradition, bread was broken over the bride's head to bring good fortune to the wedded couple. sssssssssssssssss
In Medieval times a layered wedding cake was built as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over, and as the history books suggest, if they managed to kiss each other over the top of the towering cake they were guaranteed a fruitful life together. This in turn was re-interpreted by a French pastry chef who created the 'Croquembouche' (meaning 'to crunch in the mouth') which comprises a profiterole pyramid encased in a web of spun caramel. During the 17th to the early 19th century it was commonplace for a glass ring to be placed in the “bride's pie” and whichever unmarried girl found the ring was the next to marry. Eventually this meaning was attached to the catching of the bride's bouquet. The “bride's pie” soon became the “bride's cake”, traditionally the fruit cake, which symbolised fertility and prosperity. In the 17th century there were two layers; one for the groom and one for the bride, which had white icing symbolising virginity and purity. At the beginning of the 20th century pillars between the layers were introduced and amusingly were made from broomsticks covered in icing! This method was ground breaking at the time, and is a method still used today, but the internal structure is supported by dowels instead of broomsticks! My parent's generation had the traditional fruit cake, with one layer put aside for the christening of their first child. Fast forward to the 21st century and anything goes. In fact, the more adventurous one is, the more

Never considered pear and parsnip cake? What about orange fennel blueberry, raspberry white chocolate, or lime blueberry elderflower? While those of us who attend the Saturday Farmer's Market at Riccarton Bush, will be intimately familiar with Anna's wild cake concoctions, some may not be aware that many of her cakes - some who attest to their “crack-like effect” - are healthier than most. Using unrefined sugars in natural ingredients like date puree or honey, means you can still get your cake fix without the inevitable sugar crash. t's every little girl's dream: meeting Prince Charming, getting married and living happily ever after. Isn't it? Well that's how the fairy tale goes, doesn't it? sssssssssssssssss
It doesn't say Cinderella practiced love and compassion towards her slave-driving stepmother and realised the real meaning of inner peace and true happiness, which would ultimately protect her no matter what life threw her way. Of course not. It taught generations upon generations of women that if we put on our sexiest party dress we will bewitch a handsome man who will valiantly rescue us from ourselves. I know, I know. I hear you scoff, “That's ridiculous. I'm a modern woman. I have my career, my friends, I don't need a man to be happy.� Of course none of us would ever admit to ever having fallen for that damsel in distress malarkey - not to anyone else, let alone to ourselves - but ultimately this is what we all subconsciously hope for. Ask yourself this then: am I constantly disappointed when a relationship doesn't work out? Am I comforted when I seek solace in my partner, but ultimately left feeling empty and deflated when problems arise? If only my partner

This takes some serious heartfelt soul searching and unadulterated honesty with ourselves to peel back all our neurosis and societal conditioning to reach the core of this delusion we so desperately grasp onto and is the cause of so much of our suffering. I'm going on 36 and have been married once, which didn't work out for all the above reasons. I was 24, on the verge of stepping out
into the big wide world after eight solid years of study. I was embarking on a promising career as a professional opera singer and a tall, dark and handsome stranger had just entered my life. Naturally, like any young woman has learnt from the beginning-less time, this was the moment all the pieces magically fall into place. I had arrived. I had found happiness. Not only did he physically fit the part, he had the credentials to match; a lawyer and a highly successful one at that. Happiness had arrived,

Four years later I woke up to myself and realised the misery I felt was completely of my own creation. I had unwittingly fallen victim to falling in love with the fairy tale. How cowardly had I been in handing over the responsibility of my happiness to this person and then feeling bitterly disappointed when he didn't automatically solve all my problems. Now I'm certainly not advocating that we should all commit to a life of celibacy or abstain from a relationship until we have found true happiness - for this is a lifetime's journey - but that we wake up from this fairy tale, be brave and take responsibility for rescuing ourselves.

Noma regains title of World’s Best Restaurant Danish restaurant Noma regained its title as the S.Pellegrino World’s Best Restaurant. After nine years on the list and three consecutive wins in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Noma celebrates once again as it returns to the coveted number one position.

he results were announced at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, in London recently - an event widely considered to be the highlight of the global gastronomic calendar. Noma chef-owner René Redzepi is recognised for his highly original, sometimes visceral version of new Nordic cuisine. meticulous attention to detail, innovative approach to foraging and experimentation with fermentation – all driven by passion and a relentless curiosity - has once again brought his restaurant to the pinnacle. Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca moves to the number two spot with plenty to celebrate with Jordi Roca winning the inaugural title of World’s Best Pastry Chef. Spain has seven restaurants on the list, three of which are in the top ten. Mugaritz is now at number six, with fellow San Sebastian establishment Arzak remaining at number eight. New entry Azurmendi from Larrabetzu, near Bilbao, debuts at number 26 and also picks up the Sustainable Restaurant Award. Italy has three restaurants on the list with Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana remaining at number three for the second year running. For the first time the UK has two restaurants within the top ten with Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at number five and Brett Graham’s The Ledbury at number 10. France boasts five restaurants on the list with Mirazur in Menton moving up 17 places to number 11. With seven restaurants on the list overall and two restaurants in the top ten, the USA matches Spain and France with the highest number of restaurants featured. Eleven Madison Park in New York moves up one spot at number four to claim The Best Restaurant in North America. Another title scooped by
the USA is the One To Watch, won by Saison, in San Francisco. South America also has reason to celebrate with Helena Rizzo’s Mani rising 10 spots to number 36 and Helena herself taking home the Veuve Clicquot World’s Best Female Chef Award. Alex Atala’s D.O.M in São Paulo is placed at number seven this year to once again pick up the accolade of being named Best Restaurant in South America. Atala also receives the coveted Chefs’ Choice Award, which is voted for by the chefs on the list.
The Highest Climber Award, sponsored by Lavazza, goes to Central in Lima Peru, now at number 15, having climbed an impressive 35 places. Asia now boasts seven restaurants in the world ranking including The Best Restaurant in Asia: Nahm in Bangkok, Thailand, which comes in at number 13 (up 19 places). Gaggan, also in Bangkok, is ranked number 17, scooping the Highest New Entry Award. Waku Ghin in Singapore re-enters the list at number 50.

ou know the old saying - all good things come to those who wait; well, that certainly can be said for the new Little Creatures Indian Pale Ale, which was launched in New Zealand recently.
Richard Uttley, Food & Beverage Manager at the Rydges Latimer reveals the secrets behind making a delicious Green Tea Daiquiri… Like the Margarita and most classes of cocktails, the original Daiquiri is a sophisticated mix of spirit, citrus and sugar, not some slushy frozen fruit bomb. It's not a sin to substitute, or augment with other fruit juices (Hemingway favoured grapefruit in the mix), but it might be to stir the recipe rather than shaking it to glorious epiphany.
Made with fresh hop cones, the Little Creatures team across the ditch has craftily conjured up this perfectly balanced 6.4% IPA that combines passionfruit and grapefruit aromas with a big, long bitter finish. Richard Uttley
How to make a Green Tea Daiquiri… Glassware As times change glassware moves on, the majority of bars, don't have the space to carry glassware for every drink, causing the daiquiri glass to slowly drift into history. Personally I prefer to use a champagne coupe, purely down to presentation. (Available from Total Food Equipment) Mark Scown, Craft Brand Manager, says: “The bunch of mates who first bought us Little Creatures Pale Ale some 15 years ago, have done it again with this new, flavoursome and eagerly awaited IPA. At 6.4% Little Creatures fans will definitely notice a considerable step up in flavour and we can't wait for Kiwi fans to try it.” The new Little Creatures IPA will join the existing range of Little Creatures Pale Ale, Pilsner and Rogers – mid strength amber ale. Little Creatures IPA is available at Liquor King, selected specialty liquor stores and bars around the country.

Revel in a little joie de vivre

eter Edmonds of JDV in the Merivale Mall off Aikmans Road, explains that the letters stand for joie de vivre, a French phrase often used in English to express cheerful enjoyment or an exultation of spirit. What a perfect name for such a perfect combination of hospitality, great food and wine, sophistication and warmth. “Restaurants like this one often follow trends, as fashions and the needs of the public change,” says Peter. “But right now we are back just where we started – back to the original values encapsulated in the JDV name.” The décor is alluring and interesting: somewhat minimalist and uncluttered, with high ceilings lending a graceful roominess as well as quiet and more intimate alcoves. The seating varies from sit-down dining to bar stools, to bench seating and a pleasant outdoor environment complete with sails. This means whatever your needs: after-work drink, romantic tête-à-tête, a business meeting, enjoyment of good food and wine, or a family gathering – you can be comfortably accommodated in restaurant, bar and cocktail lounge; and you could be reluctant to leave. There is excellent parking, a north-west aspect, and you are close to the mall itself without it intruding in any way. The menu is well-constructed and immaculately prepared. Sample breakfast with

Start with duck liver parfait, cornichons, cucumber pickles and baguette (a JDV classic!), and if you want something light, then the chicken, pork and pistachio terrine, stone fruit relish, more cornichons, smoked butter, and ciabatta might do the trick; and if you are really hungry, well there’s the roast beef fillet, duck fat potatoes, mushroom gratin, cress salad, and red wine jus. Come back for dinner and be tempted by Banks Peninsula lamb rack, ratatouille, potato
terrine, goat cheese beignet and minted pea puree. JDV really does seafood extremely well – king salmon, seafood linguini, market fresh fish and in season…oysters to die for! The menu is varied and well-described. JDV is one of those places where you look at the dishes being brought out from the kitchen and hope that yours, when it arrives, looks just as delicious.
Desserts you may ask? How could you turn down, served with quince paste, candied walnuts, falwasser crackers and toast, a New Zealand cheese like Whitestone Lindis Pass brie, silky and smooth, buttery like clotted cream with a caramel nuttiness giving way to an earthy mushroom taste? How could you keep your spoon away from a stone-fruit tartlet with vanilla mascarpone, Italian meringue and lemon and passion-fruit ice-cream? Well, you are just going to have to go along and enjoy JDV the way it was intended, and relish the flair and imagination it exudes. Joie de vivre, and bon appétit!

Rustic, peaceful setting divine dining
nce Morgans Vineyard to many people, Dine Divine has evolved into something remarkably different and quite spirited. Nadine Attinger explains that the concept has evolved.
“We have completely re-invented the décor,” she explains. “The make-over incorporates new lighting, carpet, a paint renovation – even a ceiling rejig. The whole atmosphere is brighter and more open-plan. “We have decided to make the environment warm, accessible, and truly a destination for many Christchurch people.” It is working. Any visit reveals a collection of groups of people enjoying themselves – an escape from suburban Christchurch that is really not very far from home, but takes you into a rural environment down Buchanan’s Road – a rustic and peaceful ambience. There is plenty of parking, and on a fine day you can dine outdoors. If you have a group to please – sports, family, office or friends, then this is the perfect spot for a getaway. “We don’t, like other places, charge a hiring fee,” says Nadine. “We aim to fit in with the needs of any group, whether it is a carefree youthful mix, or a gathering of older folk needing a quiet meal and good company.”

risp Cafe in the Fendalton Village Mall is increasingly popular with locals and has a growing influence with interest groups who enjoy meeting somewhere with a spacious and friendly ambience and great food and coffee. Owner Kal started out with a small cafe in the CBD. She has re-established herself and hasn't looked back. "The difference is amazing," she says. "Having space is wonderful, and a good kitchen means that we have control over the standard of our food." All the food you see there is produced on the premises, and in these days of healthconscious dining it is refreshing to know that what goes into the food is healthy and nutritious. The Crisp menu evolves with the seasons and a new menu is currently being rolled out. Kal also takes notice of what customers say. "We like to stick with dishes people really like, and also experiment with different food and run with suggestions. "That way our customers know their favourites are there, but there is always something different to try. "We also have an extensive range of glutenfree items." Crisp provides an all-day brunch - from 7.30am until 2pm, lunch from 11.30am - 2.30pm and the option of light meals. Opening hours are 7.30am - 4.30pm weekdays and 8.30am 4.30pm weekends.
Old favourites are there, such as toasted muesli, porridge, Egg Benedict, pancakes and a belt-straining Grande Breakfast. The creamy mushrooms are a treat - sautéed in creamy red wine sauce on grilled ciabatta. Lunch favourites include open sirloin steak sandwich and seafood chowder. Kal wonders why the American club sandwich is so popular toasted bread with roast chicken, bacon, cucumber, tomatoes and fried egg with chunky fries - but maybe the question has just been answered it tastes so damned good! Meat used is top quality and sourced from Meat@Millers, just across the road - a perfect arrangement with mutual benefits. Coffee is "Underground" meeting Crisp's service ethos. "It doesn't matter who the customer is," she says. "They all deserve respect and to feel comfortable being here." This means she is very much in a training role with her staff, takes to heart any comments made to her about the cafe, and is always looking to improve. Call in and enjoy a home cooked snack and a delightful coffee served by well-trained baristas - there is ample parking, and the mall is in many ways a bit of a hub, and easily accessible. Established in 1995, Misceo has taken a roadside corner and created an oasis – a mix of dining options – al fresco and intimate, bar type and group friendly, or just a great place for a coffee and a snack away from work. The food is beautifully prepared. The pizzas are exquisite – chicken, cranberry and brie, or Italiano, Indienne, Roast Pork, Lamb and Mint, Meat Lovers, Smoked Salmon – they are all served on an authentic crispy base that is as different from other outlets as Mars is from Jupiter. “There is always the smell of great food in here,” comments duty manager Katie McKee. She is right. Apart from pizza, there is soup, pasta, and bar snacks ranging from breads and paté to platters. Café Metro Sometimes we need to keep an eye out for new places – eateries which have sprung up in places desolated by the earthquakes, and which have kind of 'snuck up' on us. House of the Year judges on the road A new home in Christchurch and a renovation in Wellington were recognised as NZ's top properties last year. The Supreme Award for the Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year was awarded to Phil Benton Builders for this home in Merivale.

udges across the country have hit the road to assess this year's talent in the Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year.
Travelling from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South, judges will scrutinise 317 houses across New Zealand before regional event winners are announced in July and August. Ranging from new homes and show homes to renovations and builder's own homes, judges will assess the work of hundreds of builders to find the finest houses in the country. Registered Master Builders Association chief executive Warwick Quinn says the quality of the competition is the reason for its ongoing success. “Registered Master Builders continue to enter the competition year after year because winning a House of the Year award is a fantastic tool for promoting their business,” he says.
“Builders tend to work within smaller teams, and don't often get the chance to compare their work to that of others. House of the Year gives them the opportunity to see how they measure up against their peers.” The Canterbury area has seen a 29% increase in entries from 2013 reflecting the completion of homes throughout the rebuild, with entry increases also in the Auckland, East Coast, Manawatu and Wanganui and Southern regions. Mr Quinn says even after more than twenty years of House of the Year, the competition is still a calendar highlight for Master Builders. “It's fantastic to see work of such high quality from entrants every year. Not long ago on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show, Dr Oz shared with an audience of millions how these saunas are the ultimate detoxifiers and can also improve circulation, lower blood pressure, increase metabolism and weight loss and relieve pain. The big cover up... old furniture rejuvenated F
urniture is, when you think of it, basic to our existence – somewhere to sit, to lie, to sleep on, eat at, relax with, and admire. It is ubiquitous in all cultures and comes in a multitude of styles and colours.
It also gets worn with use. What happens then? It gets tossed away and replaced, or it gets repaired…re-upholstered. Paul Tainui, of Somerfield Upholstery at 10 Calgary Place in Hornby, has had 30 years of experience in upholstery, 10 years in business, and three years at the current premises. His advice on recovering furniture is vital and refreshing, as well as being for most of us, money saving. Most old furniture, and high quality new furniture, has a good solid wooden framework – “good bones” as Paul calls it, and this is important. Much new furniture looks great in the showroom, but within a year or two begins to look drab and somewhat saggy. This is because manufacturers have cut costs by using cheap timber and materials. It comes down to a simple question: should you recover the good solid framework you are being tempted to discard, and purchase something new? Paul explains that it actually costs less to

recover older furniture, and the added benefit is that it will then last many years longer than a cheap new purchase. It is a no brainer really. The wonderful thing is that you have the excitement of making your own fabric choice. He can also make small changes to design, so that, for example, arms can be altered or removed, springs replaced and facings changed. The result is really a brand new piece of furniture with the original sound wooden structure – something that will outlast much of what you will see in some furniture warehouses. An added benefit is that you can match your furniture to your décor and lifestyle.
