We're humans, we judge, it's what we do. We begin at preschool when we see different children – the rich, the poor, the shy, aggressive, silly, clever or kind; it's all part of dealing with peers and the pecking order. And that continues through high school, work, and these days it's rampant in social media. We are encouraged to judge – we watch shows like NZ’s Got Talent and celebrate the gifted and cringe at the deluded. We judge people on their clothes, their hair, how they speak, their occupations, Angela Bennett, Editor their parenting, even their possessions. Many of us sterotype others due to race. And while it's essential that we do judge and evaluate people and situations in order to survive in this world, some of our judgments can be counterproductive –ending up being erroneous, or bringing out the worst in ourselves. Sometimes judgements we make can take us by surprise. We believe we are tolerant and fair minded but suddenly an unsubstantiated thought can leave us thinking 'whoa, where did that come from?' Thankfully we can blame our brains for our shortcomings. Research reported in Women's Health magazine has found that the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure in the brain, detects threats in the environment and responds in milliseconds – before you have a chance to fully process a person or situation. This is our snapjudgement that activates our sometimes unconscious attitudes. It once ensured our survival, protecting us from outsiders who didn't act like us and were rivals to our food, shelter or necessities. It's the primitive machinery of the subcortex that still kicks into high gear today vigilantly detecting Us versus Them and automatically treating Them as a threat. But before you lose faith in our ability to transcend the primitive parts of our brain and be increasingly civilised and tolerant, researchers have also found that our brains are also hardwired for egalitarianism. That same command centre is also designed for cooperation and fairness. David Amodio, PhD, an associate professor of psychology and neural science at New York University was reported in Women's Health magazine as saying that at some point in our evolution, we developed an entirely new brain structure called the neocortex – what researchers refer to as the “higher mind” – which works to fine tune behaviour and override initial impulses. This 'filter' takes the first automatic response that pops into our heads and translates it into a more socially or morally acceptable reaction. “People are really good at controlling their actions, but they're really bad at controlling their thoughts and emotions,” says Amodio. It's an interesting point to keep in mind. How we jump to conclusions and can judge others unfairly is humorously highlighted in the “Don't Judge Too Quickly” ad campaign that was created around 2005 in the US. There's a series you can see on YouTube but here's one example to give you an idea: “A guy's preparing a beautiful dinner for a romantic evening. Just as he's cutting up the meat, the cat jumps on to the stove and knocks over the saucepan. There's red sauce all over the floor, and the cat. Still holding the knife in one hand he picks up the cat by its scruff in the other. At this very moment the love interest opens the door…” Next time I feel like I'm being quick to judge I'm going to take five and give my neocortex just a little more time to compute.

Tony Brooks is the founder of the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force (SURF) which aims to rejuvenate New Brighton's business district, using corporate sponsorship and public donations to attract investment in the earthquake-damaged area. I caught up with Tony to find out a little more about the man behind this initiative and how such a huge challenge can be achieved… What is the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force (SURF)? SURF is a private company that was formed to enable a series of key projects that have been designed to rejuvenate both the CBD of New Brighton and surrounding suburb. It will tackle a mix of social projects and business propositions with the view to attracting investment and business to the area. What led you to initiating SURF? I sat on the board of the New Brighton Business and Land Owners Association before leaving to establish SURF. In my time with the board, we uncovered the need for a company/organisation to step into the mix to enable the planned projects we were investigating. It is as the result of identifying this need that SURF came to fruition. How much do you hope SURF will raise? We don't have a predetermined target in mind. We will ensure that we use any funds raised to maximum benefit. However, we know what we can achieve with 500k. We also know what is possible with $2 million. What are the key projects you hope to achieve?

T

ony Brooks cares passionately about New Brighton. He has lived in the area, he is the owner of New Brighton's Pierside Café and Bar, and he has proud memories of New Brighton when it was one of our city's greatest natural assets. The time when it boasted plenty of safe walkways, a popular beach, parks, dining and shopping, all enveloped by a buzzy seaside ambience. He wants that kind of era back – a New Brighton that welcomes and once again provides Cantabrians with an anchor for recreation.

It should be the place where all Christchurch residents come to relax and play.

Tony Brooks We want to upgrade and introduce significant security measures to the area. Cameras, security patrols and initiatives in conjunction with Police. We don't want to stop at simply introducing security solutions. We want to make it one of the safest areas in Christchurch. We are looking at options like covering The Mall and remodelling to support a robust hospitality precinct. We want to invest in a series of market spaces including a Boat Shed Market with 16 plus retailers, an Asian themed market with food stalls, entertainment and retail products and a Black Market which is high street products at affordable prices. We have key investor projects planned such as Wavegarden, which is an artificial wave facility producing perfect 6ft waves every 60 seconds, perfect for surfers of all levels. This project shows impressive returns on investment and would quickly become one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

Is the council involved? The council has had no involvement with the design or establishment of SURF. We are a private company so unlike community groups, we don't rely on a council funding pool to operate. We will approach council when we need their assistance, and there will be many occasions when we do, but we have no plans at this stage to involve them in the development stages.

How important is it to engage the community? In short, it's vital. If we don't get the support of the community we don't have projects. If we don't have projects we don't have a rebuild. So the most important focus of this entire campaign is to both engage the public, whilst providing them with the opportunity to contribute to the decisions.

What is your vision for the new “soul” or “buzz” of New Brighton? Different. Niche. Funky. Affordable and cool. We are aiming to promote the natural assets in the area also which includes surfing, beaches, mountain biking, running, wind surfing, swimming, waka ama, canoeing etc. It should be the place where all Christchurch residents come to relax and play.

How will you get the residents and business owners in New Brighton involved and committed to this initiative? They are already thirsty for change and progress so getting their support is relatively simple. Getting them to action that support is a bit different, however, we are confident that, that support will transfer into action once they see the projects, the marketing campaigns and the hard work that has gone into creating this vehicle for them.

On a more personal note: what is your proudest achievement? Getting SURF to where it is now. I have a list of proud achievements in my life across sport and a professional career but this, to date, has been the most satisfying. I am relishing being able to apply my sales and marketing experience to do good, instead of just making money for large corporations.

How can the public in wider Christchurch who care about New Brighton get involved? Visit our website www.surfnewbrighton.co.nz or join us on www.facebook.com/ explorenewbrighton1.

There is a current preconception from the city about New Brighton how do you believe you can change this? It starts with making the area safe again by introducing the proposed security measures. We then introduce the various retail options giving life and energy to the business district and then we implement the key investor projects, almost like the cherry on top. This progression from slum to funky suburb will generate its own positive marketing and hence should change the perception of the area.

Personally, what is one thing you would like to see in the 'new' New Brighton? Wavegarden is my personal favourite. I am very much looking forward to implementing this project. That would represent the pinnacle of my professional career. What's next on the wish list? A holiday. Hahaha. I wish.

Battle of the Rebuild smashes record Battle of the Rebuild has raised nearly quarter of a million dollars for Christchurch causes. Sixteen contenders from the building and construction industry, and two professionals, put their bodies on the line for the charity boxing event at CBS Canterbury Arena recently. Fundraising efforts topped $240,000, surpassing the $203,000 raised at last year's Fight For Christchurch event. The charities receiving the funds are the Aranui and Linwood College Breakfast Club, the Champion Centre, and Canterbury Youth Development Programme Trust (CYDP). Battle of the Rebuild is the brainchild of Christchurch event management company Enth Degree, whose hugely-successful Fight for Christchurch events have now raised more than $790,000 for local charities since 2010. About 2800 vociferous guests attended the black-tie event. With a red carpet entrance complete with paparazzi, celebrity guests and spectacular entertainment, Battle of the Rebuild had all the glitz and glamour of a top Las Vegas fight night. Battle of the Rebuild will be screened on CTV on May 17 and 18.

Meet artist & intrepid traveller Min Kim

M

in Kim has two passions – painting and travelling – and has combined the two for most of her professional life as an artist. Be it Italy, Morocco or New Zealand, through her distinct, highly detailed style, and using the appropriate colours of the many countries she has visited, Min manages to capture the character of these places and their people. Entitled Traveller, the latest exhibition of her work, which consists of paintings she has just completed, is now on at the Bryce Gallery, at the corner of Riccarton Road and Paeroa Street. Born in South Korea, Min first visited New Zealand in 1998 as a backpacker, travelling overland for 45 days from Cape Reinga at the top, right down to Dunedin. “I immediately fell in love with New Zealand. I had already travelled in many other countries but felt closely connected to New Zealand and decided to immigrate here,” says Min. “I settled in Christchurch in 1999. I loved the lifestyle – the people, the gardens, everything.” Min had already obtained a degree in fine arts, focusing on oil painting, at the University of Korea, and went on in 2007 to study for three years in Florence, Italy. “I went to live and learn there – absorbing everything. I also fell in love with Florence and have been back almost every year. It's a special town, but not just for me – all artists love Florence. It's a city with a different energy for artists,” says Min. Min's classical impressionist style was particularly suited to the buildings of Florence,

The Blue Day

My Street, My Fountain as well as Venice and Rome – and even some of the older buildings of Christchurch, like the Art Centre.

Min Kim in Morocco Min describes classical impressionism as a 19th-century style, between classical and modern. Using this, painters of that time created art with classical skill and modern passion. “The classical style was used to re-create history with no personal expression. Impressionism has a strong foundation of classical skills – with beautiful detail and depth – but it is done with a wider, instinctive brushstroke,” she says. Min never ceases moving on and her current exhibition takes a slightly different approach – less classical in style, with much of the work done with a palette knife, thus giving it more texture. “It's not photographic in style. A palette knife gives a magical depth and lots of layers. You never finish at one layer,” says Kim. Colour is also very important. “For my New Zealand work, my palette was more autumn colours, with earth browns and greens. But my visits to Turkey and Morocco gave me a different sense of colour – the culture and even the food gave me a different impression,” says Min. “After visiting these countries, I use more ocean blue – turquoise, deep green and deep blue.” You may also be interested to see what colours she chooses for Paris, New York and Chicago…

Now where did I park? New Novotel for New Plymouth

Google Now is getting a new superpower: it's going to be able to remember where you parked. Using your phone's sensors, it'll figure out when you've exited a moving vehicle and remember your car's location automatically, so you don't even have to think twice. Of course, that means you could also get parking locations when you step off the bus, but better to have extra info than not enough. And as with all Google Now cards, you have the option to turn it off entirely. Read the full story at Gizmodo.

Accor has announced that its eighth Novotel hotel in NZ will join its network in 2015. Currently under construction, the new 100-room Novotel New Plymouth is scheduled to open early next year. The $22 million hotel development, is located in a prime location on the corner of Leach and Hobson Streets, which is just a short walk from the town centre and conveniently accessible to all major tourist attractions. Globally the Novotel network has approximately 400 hotels in 60 countries.

James Cook’s New World The sensational fictionalised account of James Cook's extraordinary second voyage of discovery from the tropical isles of Polynesia to the icy seas of the great Southern Ocean, the furthest south anyone had ever sailed, is an exceptional new novel by Graeme Lay. The year is 1771. James Cook, recently returned from his first, epic world voyage, is promoted to captain and instructed to embark on a search for the last undiscovered landmass, the Great Unknown Southern Continent. This proves to be one of the longest and most perilous voyages ever undertaken. Like an 18thcentury Ulysses, Cook drives himself and his men onward, traversing the entire South Pacific, putting into place the last pieces of Earth's great jigsaw puzzle.

Twenty-six leading fashion designers and retailers showed their winter collections punctuated with outstanding and “never before seen in New Zealand” entertainment from the moment the guests walked in the doors of the stunning venue at The Tannery to the very end of the show. Founder and Director of CFBW Denyse Saunders said comments about the Black Tie event following the show were exciting. Some were: “We could have been anywhere in the world like Paris or Milan." "This is world class." "No one else in New Zealand does such outstanding fashion events." "I am booking two tables next time." "Unique, memorable and truly extraordinary...” Denyse says she is very proud of the male and female models from her agency DS Management who worked so hard during the week, as well as everyone else who worked on all of the shows, and the sponsor Major Holdings Christchurch. Canterbury PhD model on US Today Show

University of Canterbury postgraduate student Dr Nicole Kleinstreuer appeared on NBC News' Today Show in the United States recently for being one of a number of PhD students from around the world to feature in a modelling campaign. Dr Kleinstreuer, who graduated from Canterbury with a doctorate in bioengineering, says she was approached by design company Betabrand to participate in their PhD modelling campaign. The Today Show, a national morning show in the United States, filmed the campaign's photo shoot and the segment aired on the show recently as part of a series of stories on redefining beauty. “I was interviewed by Jenna Bush (George W. Bush's daughter), who is a correspondent for The Today Show. She was lovely, very down to earth and easy to talk to, perhaps a little to my surprise,” Dr Kleinstreuer says. “While working as a model earlier, I was put off by the amount of anti-intellectualism in the industry. It's almost as if models are expected to be stupid and you are viewed with extreme suspicion if you choose not to conform to that stereotype. “I think society's concept of beauty is pretty limited, and could certainly use a redefinition to encompass much more of the self than just the surface. “My PhD research was in the Centre for Bioengineering at the University of Canterbury and I focused on mathematical modelling and looked at mechanisms by which the kidney maintains balance in the body. “The mathematical models we developed

could someday help to inform control devices for artificial kidneys. It is great to be academic but to also engage with every day activities. While I was at Canterbury, I also taught salsa to many other students.” Dr Kleinstreuer did her postdoctoral training with the United States Environmental Protection Agency which is one of the most critical federal regulatory agencies in the world, and set limits for air emissions, chemical use limits such as pesticides, drinking water quality and a whole range of other standards to protect human health and the environment. “I miss Christchurch and the University of Canterbury enormously. During the visits I've made back since then the earthquakes, it has been heart-warming to see how strong Cantabrians are and how much progress is being made to the rebuild. “The spirit of the University of Canterbury cannot be shaken by any natural disaster. There is resilience and a camaraderie among all the students and staff that will always endure. “Students who complete the courses there will have a pretty amazing graduate profile, considering what Christchurch has gone through. I was able to get the best postdoctorate position I could have ever asked for coming straight out of my PhD at Canterbury.”

“I think society's concept of beauty is pretty limited, and could certainly use a redefinition to encompass much more of the self than just the surface.

The new charges cover both one and two-hour parking zones. The Council is also continuing to work with the Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) on a long-term citywide parking plan.

Outlined areas show the $2 short-term meter parking.

Parking prices Christchurch’s painting gift decrease in Central City Australian artist Denise Daffara and Californian Artist Kerry Lee visited Christchurch to teach one day “An Encounter with your Inspirational Muse” workshops recently. They are leaving the city with a gift of the painting they created and now welcome suggestions on which Women's Shelter or place of care for Women would be a fitting home. New Zealand born Denise has been an artist in Australia for 14 years and met Kerry Lee in California during their teacher training for the 'Color of Woman Method' in 2013. Kerry Lee was awarded a trip to New Zealand and was inspired to bring the Method across the seas. They are very pleased to have brought this inspirational offering to New Zealand for the first time and have been warmly received by The Drawing Room art supply store who sold out the first session in 48 hours.

The 'Color of Woman Method' is a style of painting developed by Shiloh Sophia McCloud and practiced for close to twenty years with thousands of students. The style involves a stepby-step method of creating a painting that allows anyone to paint an image drawing from

his or her internal imagery, symbol and story. The style of painting is referred to as Contemporary Symbolism and draws from the working style of Matisse, Frida Kahlo, Gustave Klimt, Chagall and Redon to name a few who used internal images as their source for creating art instead of only external images. The work also draws upon the research done by Carl Jung about how we can use our imagination to access and receive useful information from our unconscious selves. Suggestions for a Women's Shelter or similar that Denise and Kerry's painting could be most appropriately gifted to may be sent to Kerry@KerryLeeArt.com with a description, 500 words or less, of the organisation with their contact details and website. Please use “Christchurch Painting Gift” in the subject line. The cut-off date for submissions is 5pm Monday 19 May.

Pods under construction The much anticipated Pod worker accommodation is under construction with a completion date of late June 2014. Located in Parlane Street in Addington, the 15 unit worker accommodation, constructed using shipping containers, will house workers in self-contained units for a rental of approximately $300 a week. Rob Strickland of Edifice Ltd launched the concept of The Pods in June last year. The development will come on time as the rental housing shortage continues to grow

and create issues in the city. Each pod measures 5.8m by 2.3m and comes fully furnished with a kitchenette, bathroom ensuite, bed, flat screen television, play station, wireless internet and heat pump. As part of The Pod Parlane Street Development, a communal space will also be available for those looking to socialise or utilise shared facilities. More information on the Pods can be found at www.thepods.co.nz – including information for investors or tenants.

fter more than nine years Global Living has truly established a reputation for custom-made furniture. Its success is in large part a result of following the mantra of quality, comfort and style, and the expression 'value for money' sums up its approach. “While an architect creates the space, the furniture is what you truly live in. More often than not, furniture can be an afterthought when designing the ideal home. It is important when choosing furniture to suit a particular space, that it be indicative of the style and attitude of those who are actually living in it. One of the services that Global Living offers is Home Consultation. Within our qualified design team, a consultant can be appointed to assist on the layout of furniture and accessories within your

architecturally-designed home,” says coowner Kieran Kavanagh. Global Living offers a wide range of materials and styles to make each home a unique composition. Whether it is a lounge suite, dining suite, buffet, bookcase, or coffee table, Global Living can manufacture it. This furniture is proudly custom built by experienced manufacturers within Christchurch. The quality of these pieces is backed by at least a five-year warranty. The process starts with a free consultation by a member of the design team either in the customer's home, or at Global Living itself. The consultant can work from the house plans or existing measurements to help create a layout with the emphasis on flow, allowing enough space around the furniture. The size of a piece of furniture can interrupt or accentuate the functionality of a room. Materials and colour are also carefully considered when determining the overall feel. Is it vibrant colours or neutral tones that you look to when visualising your ideal space? Whether it is one item, or an entire house full of furniture that you are after, Global Living can help to get your home to the level of comfort and style that you are seeking. Too often people think of furnishing as an afterthought when they plan their new homes. Wrong. Global Living can help you turn your living space into something which contributes to the enjoyment of your home.

but don’t compromise

Kieran travels the world attending trade fairs, to keep up with the changing fashions and be the first to import the latest designs. Many of the designs imported are Italianinspired and Kieran describes the style and design that the Italians have as second to none. “The Italians have a reputation for being the best designers in the world and they are. However, we are designing and manufacturing furniture for our customers that would equal anything we saw in places like Milan.”

IMG reclining chairs are popular right now. Long-term comfort requires correct, ergonomic design. Every chair and sofa that IMG makes is therefore designed to be both comfortable and ergonomically correct. This concept is one you just have to try out. Global Living stands by the quality of their product, value for money and theirafter-sales service is bettered by none. Global Living's new store is now open at 100 Moorhouse Avenue, Hagley Park end. Quick Facts about Staples Rodway:

f you search the internet for accountant jokes, you’ll find plenty. We’ve put a small sample below,” says Spencer Smith of Staples Rodway. Q. What's the definition of an accountant? A. Someone who solves a problem you didn't know you had in a way you don't understand.

Q. What's the definition of a good tax accountant? A. Someone who has a loophole named after him.

Q. What's an extroverted accountant? A. One who looks at your shoes while he's talking to you instead of his own. So what excites a good accountant? Don’t laugh, says Spencer, because the answer is their clients, who are far from being dry humourless people. A good accountant is passionate about what they do, enjoys human interaction, and the best of them seem to take their business seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Clients of Staples Rodway expect more depth and expertise from them than the average firm and they like dealing with a firm that is locally owned, but has national size and global reach. They also expect a strong personal relationship with at least one of its directors, and usually more than one. “That’s a given, to our way of thinking, because we strongly believe the key ingredient to excellent client service is to understand how each client

defines ‘success’ for their business.” Maybe that is why one of the strengths of Staples Rodway Christchurch is the large number of long standing clients. A profit is essential to every business, but that is where the similarity often ends. Some business owners want to be able to take more time out, some pursue technical excellence, while others want to create a legacy for the next generation. The list is as varied as the company’s extensive client base. “That is why we believe our personal relationships with each and every client are a vital part of our service,” says Spencer. n early understanding of ecology and sustainability, and depicting this through art is the major project undertaken so far this year by the children of Room 1, Year 3, at Elmwood Normal School under the guidance of their teacher, Meg Feller. The first-term focus on environmental issues began with a virtual trip around New Zealand wetlands, presented to the children through class computers. This was followed by a real-life visit to the 116-hectare Travis Wetland Nature Heritage Park, located at the end of Beach Road, just inland from North Brighton, where the children were taken on a field trip by four park rangers.

They got to watch native birds with binoculars, scoop bugs out of the water and also began their understanding of the meaning of a food chain and the importance of conservation. A visit to Travis Wetland can be an eyeopener for people of all ages, and for these seven-year-old children it was a real adventure. They got to watch native birds with binoculars, scoop bugs out of the water and also began their understanding of the meaning of a food chain and the importance of conservation. Back at school, the next adventure was embarking on the systemic production of wonderful wetlands art, with the help of Lisa Bowden, the mother of one of the class pupils, Felix. Lisa helped in three sessions, instructing the class on the basic elements of landscape and wildlife drawing. The objective of the first session was to record the key elements of the landscape, by explaining just what makes it interesting: “Where is the horizon?”, “What colours do you see?”, “What is the main vegetation?”

Working with pastels on black paper, she taught the children to choose the appropriate colours to draw the outline of the landscape, from the foreground through the middleground to the background. During the second session, Lisa explained that art can have a message, asking the children what they wanted to share about the wetlands: “What did we learn?”, “With whom are we sharing our message?” She showed the class the work of New Zealand artist Nigel Brown, who incorporates

words around the border of his paintings, and suggested the children do the same. In the third session, Lisa got the children to present their work as a group, including 24 of the drawings, in three rows of eight, on a large mat measuring 2m by 1m. A border of words was created around the mat to convey the children's message. This is now on display in their classroom. Thanks to their teacher Meg Feller, who is also very technically advanced, photos of the children at work, plus Lisa working with them, can be found on their own website, http://room1elmwood.weebly.com/thearts.html Particularly impressive is the Travis Wetlands Movie, put together by Meg of photos taken by her of the children at the wetlands and working on their drawings. This is all held together by a delightful song, entitled Paradise, composed by a high school student, Waimarie Smith, which tells it all.

A constant rock and roll of humour

G

oing along to watch Billy Connolly for two hours is a riot – a constant rock and roll of humour that leaves you the next morning scratching your head to think of the jokes, and realising that they have come thick and fast and each one tumbles over the previous one. It is like working your way through an evening-long smorgasbord of delectable treats and then going back and trying to remember each individual taste. To an audience of something like 5,000 at the CBS Canterbury Arena recently on Anzac Day's evening, Billy was a treat. He began by mentioning his impression of post-earthquake Christchurch – not something many would see as a joke – but he managed his observation perfectly, saying that with all the changes, he didn't know where he was…and a lot of Christchurch people don't know where they are either! Well…that is true in more ways than one! A few of the jokes were old ones, but delivered with such great timing and contextual empathy, that they were funny all over again. Who could not fail to enjoy the story of the balaclava knitting – the one where the eyes were in the wrong place and caused him to squint, and the one that was knitted with earholes? The swearing was there, but the expletive-ridden monologue is now expected, and is an intrinsic part of the delivery – we are taken back to earth in many ways. In fact we are often made to look at reality anew. Why is it, for example, that whenever we look in a glovebox in a car, there is never a glove there? That is the work of a comedian – to make us look at ourselves with fresh eyes; to move us outside the square. Billy is looking, naturally enough, older. At 71 he

has been visiting New Zealand for forty years and clearly loves being here. But he has faced the twin afflictions of prostate cancer and Parkinson's and although there is always the potential to upset those who have some sort of close connection with these conditions, he is able, through his humour, to demonstrate how he has dealt with reality. Yes, Billy, we know about the shaking of the hands; but we really did not think about what a bad look putting those hands in our front trouser pockets would give! Rather than making him weary, his physiological difficulties seem to have given him fresh perspectives and new angles. The evening was a continual roll of laughter; the atmosphere one of appreciation, and the memories something to share. Billy may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he is a glimpse of gold in what can sometimes be a grey existence. Some gems of his to finish with? “The great thing about Glasgow is that if there's a nuclear attack, it'll look exactly the same afterwards.” And… “I don't know why I should have to learn Algebra… I am never likely to go there.” Or… “Marriage is a wonderful invention: then again, so is a bicycle repair kit.”

Why is it, that whenever we look in a glovebox in a car, there is never a glove there? That is the work of a comedian – to make us look at ourselves with fresh eyes; to move us outside the square.

Police Kiosk volunteers serve vital function

W

e have all seen the Police Kiosk in Cathedral Square – it has become, over the years, something of an iconic landmark; but more than that, it serves a vital function.

In the 1980s there was a spate of serious crimes in Christchurch and in other areas of New Zealand, and there was a strong move to deal with the issue and to create a more effective form of community policing. The result was the building of the Community Police Office in the Square, which was officially opened in 1986. The main objective of the office was, and still is, the maintenance of a link between the police and community. Volunteers deal with matters that do not require the attention of a police officer, such as lost and found property, giving directions and advice to tourists and the public, and directing them to various agencies if required. They are sometimes the first port of call for criminal matters, but these are either referred to police who are on duty in the building, or to the Central Police Station. The February 2011 earthquake caused the system havoc of course. Although police continued operating from the site, the kiosk was out of bounds for volunteers until they returned in November 2013. Police have a presence in the kiosk from 8am – 5pm on weekdays, and volunteers are on duty from 9am – 5pm seven days. Volunteer Coordinator Rod Burbery explained how volunteers are selected. “It is usually word of mouth or just a tap on the shoulder. Then there is an interview, an

24 May 15, 2014 Metropol

application form is filled out and a police clearance check completed.” As can be expected, most volunteers are at least 60 years old. “It is an ideal occupation for a retiree who still wants to put something back into the community,” says Rod. “There are many other volunteer activities also: crime cameras, community watch, as well as the inquiry desk at the Central Police Station. One benefit volunteers have is that they are easy for many to approach. For some overseas visitors who may feel uneasy about someone in a uniform, a volunteer makes things more comfortable. There is an excellent rapport between the volunteers and the police, and within the volunteers themselves. Sandy Brunt was the original coordinator – was so for 20 years – and at 96 years is still interested and keeps in touch. Four volunteers from the original intake are still on deck. The occasional young person takes an interest in helping – usually wanting to get a practical introduction to the work of police as a career option. It is not always serious stuff though! Longtime volunteer Max Sword remembers a young man waiting for a bus, while sitting on a metal seat with holes near the kiosk. Bored,

he put a finger through a hole, and immediately found himself stuck fast. Max tried to extract his finger with the help of dishwashing detergent, but it was no use. So he called (much to the young gentleman’s embarrassment), the Fire Brigade, who clipped the seat and rescued him! They do a great job, those volunteers. Next time you walk past the kiosk, give them a wave!

haring in the special occasions of customers, friends and family was the catalyst for Liam's designer Emily Miller-Sharma to launch Liam Celebrations, a beautifully innovative collection of customisable, madeto-measure dresses and separates. “We really enjoy working with women in exciting times of their lives, whether it's a wedding, a ball, a 21st, a graduation... Helping them find the perfect dress, from the colour and cut to the fabric and the fit, it's such a great feeling - we wanted to share it with as many Liam customers as possible and make it an enjoyable, easy and exciting experience,” says Emily. Liam Celebrations launches with a comprehensive collection of designs, carefully selected to satisfy all sartorial tastes, while encapsulating Liam's modern, refined ethos.

“There's a selection of beautiful fabrics in this first range - silks, jacquards, a cotton lace and a crepe embroidered with mirrors,” says Emily. “The palette was chosen from our most requested shades with my take on those colours - a clean taupe, a classic navy, a cool ice blue, a sophisticated, delicate peach and a fresh white.” Customers can start their Celebrations experience in any RUBY store, browsing designs, fabric swatches and colour palettes before having their measurements taken by specially trained staff. For those without a RUBY store nearby, the process can also be done remotely via www.rubynz.com/liamcelebrations. Making waves in the hairdressing world

T

ucked in amongst the striking historic brick terraced buildings of Durham Street's Blackheath Place, The Headmistress Hair Designers is making exciting waves in the hairdressing world – waves, ringlets and curls, that is.

With new stylists Sam Bennett and Laura Finch complementing the highly experienced team, the inner city salon is as popular as ever. Trained at the exclusive Wellington salon Buoy, Sam was hairdresser to the elite at both the New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. “He is also a regular artistic stylist for New Zealand fashion week and is exceptional at what he does,” The Headmistress owner Ellen Kerse says. Laura is an award winning, fully qualified senior stylist who started earlier this year at the salon. “Laura entered a number of competitions last year,” Ellen says. “She's great; she placed really well at last year's regionals and is highly experienced.” A highly qualified and experienced hairdresser

“It's easy to underestimate the difference a fantastic cut and colour can make, not just in terms of how you feel, but right through to others' perceptions of you.” herself, Ellen has been in the industry for more than 13 years and has worked as a stylist for the Dunedin Fashion Week. “It's an amazing opportunity to make people look and feel great about themselves,” she says. “There are no barriers to what you can create with cuts and colours.” And luckily too. A recent body of work concluded that women with beautiful hair were judged as younger, more professional and better looking. While it's easy to sneer at the idea that someone may feel seriously depressed and emotional because of a little old bad hair day, research shows hair can result in other people making snap judgments on your personality and ability to manage your life. “Great hair makes a significant difference in your appearance,” Ellen says. “It's easy to underestimate the difference a fantastic cut and colour can make, not just in

Lucy, Laura, Beren, Ellen, Sam and Caitlin terms of how you feel, but right through to others' perceptions of you.” Thankfully with The Headmistress' strong team of stylists, you need not worry about bad hair days ever again. “Lucy is great with big Hollywood hair styles,” Ellen says. “Big blow waves and natural looking colours.” Beren is a pro with the short hair and those of us blessed with lots of natural curls. “She's great with precision cutting, and our junior Caitlin is also very talented with a growing panache for hair-ups. She has a great career ahead of her.” The Headmistress has a superb referral programme, so every time you find them a

Shaping the future

L

ooking towards the progressive inner city development of Christchurch has been the inspiration this season for Sakaguchi's A/W 14 collection. Geometric shapes and wood grain textures have been borrowed from the urban environment both graphic and moody - layers of fresh colour and print convey the spirit of this season's collection – Shadows of the Sky. All garments are proudly one hundred percent New Zealand made in a superior level of finish, detail, fit and feel. High quality fabrics, explorative thinking, challenging pattern making and experimental techniques

are examples of the dedication and enduring nature of the brand. Monochromatic washes ease the transition between otherwise clashing hues taking on maximum impact when layered in shaded combinations. Sheer chiffons and translucent silks have been used as laying pieces for a diffused veiling effect with luxe wools of mismatched proportion. Tailoring remains strong this season both structured and relaxed with exaggerated cuffs and collars that can be effortlessly layered to create a personal style. Asymmetric shape and fluid fabrics lend themselves to uncomplicated layering pieces and the use of tone and texture to create a distinctive Sakaguchi aesthetic. There are true

standout pieces to flatter all figure types that will transcend throughout the seasons. The T label, a second diffusion of the Sakaguchi label remains popular and is enjoying bold growth throughout New Zealand and Australia. It is strongly influenced this season by architectural lines and geometric shapes. Slinky knits and billowing chiffons have been cleverly cut in oversized pieces with dropped and curved hemlines that can be draped and layered to lengthen the silhouette. Cool greys and winter darks have been merged with an offbeat colour palette and explosive prints creating a distinctive, confident and edgy style that is independent and unique. Top ten tips for natural baby making

S

eeking medical advice for any health issue can be a daunting first step. For couples wanting to start a family it can also be difficult to know exactly when this help is needed.

Dr Janene Brown, Fertility Specialist at Genea Oxford Women's Health, says that it is well accepted that 12 months of trying without success, or six months if you are over 35 years, is an indication that things aren't working quite as they should be. Brown recommends a number of simple steps to enhance the chances of natural conception: 1. Don't leave it too late! Women are born with all their eggs and those eggs decline in both quantity and quality over time - the chance of a woman conceiving drops sharply from her late 30s. 2. Formulate a good diet and exercise routine. Women have a higher chance of conception when they are in a normal body mass index (BMI) range of between 18.5– 24.9.

Dr Janene Brown 3. Take appropriate preconception supplements. All women trying to conceive should take supplemental folic acid (folate) to ensure the best chance of a healthy pregnancy. Some are also deficient in vitamin D and

iodine, so it's worth investigating your levels with your GP. 4. Try to have sex about every other day particularly leading up to the middle of your cycle. 5. Know your cycle. Women with 28 day menstrual cycles usually ovulate about 14 days after the start of their period - this is the best time to have unprotected sex. There are various simple ways to figure out when you ovulate, including an ovulation calculator at www.geneaoxford.co.nz. 6. Don't smoke and significantly curtail alcohol and caffeine consumption. Smoking is toxic to human eggs and has long lasting negative effects even after a woman stops. It takes two healthy partners to make a baby so make sure you are both healthy, not smoking and reducing alcohol consumption.

7. Remember that your friends and even your mother are not necessarily fertility experts - despite their personal experiences. 8. Try to relax. Obsessing about conception can leave you so stressed that it affects your ovulation. Consider strategies to reduce anxiety and help you remain positive. 9. Live a normal and happy life. Keep exercising and doing the things you enjoy. 10. Make a plan. Many couples who have fertility treatment say the best piece of advice they would give couples trying to conceive is to seek help earlier. Most importantly, says Brown, if you're becoming stressed about not conceiving then give them a call at Genea Oxford Women's Health to talk about your options rather than waiting and worrying.

As part of taylor’s winter 2014 collection Fragment, the Merino Week collection is inspired by the subconscious, where irregularity, misconception and misplacement challenge our reality. This season’s collection is characterised by the intentional fragmentation, distortion and dislocation of elements. These extremely limited edition pieces were revealed at a special Wellington Fashion Week pre-show event at taylor’s Old Bank Arcade store in Wellington recently. As with the rest of taylor’s Fragment collection, the Merino Week capsule collection contrasts hard against soft, structure against fluidity. The collection plays with dimensions, lengths, cuts and a hint of drapery. Softer elements appear composed and sculpted while rigid shapes are elongated and subjected to textural plays. ‘Fragment’ uses calm monochrome tones with an emphasis on natural textures. The cuts are kept clean and simple - feminine with boyish references. The muted colour palette is comprised of a selection of deep blacks, darkened tones and crisp whites, freshened by a subtle infusion of powder pink and shades of violet and plum. As with all taylor’s collections, each piece in ‘Fragment’ underlines a desire for personal Metropol May 15, 2014 31

New local label Anna Coleta joins designer range Long established fashion distributor McCauls first made their name specialising in fine women’s coats. They have since expanded their collections through collaborations with leading international and local brands, including their own innovative new label Anna Coleta.

A

nna Coleta embarks on its very first season with a distinctive line of women’s winter coats, trenches and vests, pulling together modern accents with traditional lines and silhouettes to present a portfolio of timeless winter overthrows. Founding the creation is duo Ingrid and Tim Willis – owners of McCauls who have been involved with the industry for a number of years working with a number of well-known designers, including an established Wellington designer now based in Melbourne who helped define the brand’s vision. Inspired by and fittingly named after Ingrid’s Dutch grandmother, who captivated with her classic style and warm charm, the label is bound by European themes that have been reappropriated for the Australasian palette – and the wellharmonised collection sure looks set to impress. “The pieces are not so age restrictive – they are trendy and for the next generation but the styles complement the various body shapes of modern women,” they say. Winter’s collection is united by chic cohesiveness, and yet each style exists almost as an individual work of art; subtle prints and quirky touches add depth to and differentiate the pieces from other seasonal buys. The traditional Avenger and edgier Mod Trench (in red, stone and black), and the shorter hooded Brooklyn Trench (in lime and wedgewood), the Princess and Dame Puffer Jackets (in black, pewter, toffee and snow) and the Puffer Vest (in black, toffee and pewter) complete a line that harmonises colours, materials, structuring and draping for pieces that effortlessly translate from day to night and season-to-season. “We recognised a gap in the market for avant-garde, good quality clothing that lasts yet is not so expensive… Anna Coleta is all locally designed specifically for the NZ market and in our view truly represents value and timelessness,” they say. A reasonable price point makes modish aesthetics that much more accessible for many women. Anna Coleta is available in a number of top boutiques throughout Canterbury, including Rangiora, Ashburton & Timaru. Phone McCauls on 0508 522 522 for your nearest stockist.

LA'BONIC Liquid Gold Regenerating Night Oil Tester: Female aged 55 Oddly enough, as soon as the cold weather hits my skin dries out and becomes dull and uneven in tone. I hadn't tried any of the La'Bonic range before but it is made in New Zealand and certified by BioGro – NZ's leading organic certifier and USDA in the US. The products use only plant-based and sustainable ingredients and most contain over 95% certified organic content and no preservatives, fillers, colours or artificial fragrances. I trialled the Liquid Gold Regenerating Night Oil which is obtained from the blooms of the Damascus Rose. Rose oil has been used for centuries for its anti-ageing, hydrating and repairing properties. When I pressed a few drops of the oil onto my face after cleansing and toning the first night my skin absorbed it in seconds. After two weeks my skin is looking and feeling so much better – less tight and stretched, well hydrated, smoother and more even toned. I am pleased to have discovered this beautiful product and would thoroughly recommend it to others with dry, sensitive and/or uneven skin tone. La'Bonic also slipped a little sachet of their Rose Organic Makeup Removing Gel in for me to try and I am off to buy some of that, it is lovely to use. Night Oil RRP$45 available from labonic.com.

Trans-seasonal dressing Stylist Stephanie Rumble of Flair Image

A

t this time of the year we can be frozen and throwing on the merino one minute and stripping off to our base layers the next. My answer is trans-seasonal dressing, or layering. Wear at least two garments if not three so you can remove or add as the weather dictates (NIWA is predicting a warm winter by the way). It is best to keep the bottom layer sheer or lightweight so you don't roast when it warms up. Add a warm jersey and then a coat if necessary. The 'tights and a dress' combo is also a good option as it's not as snug as jeans but warmer than bare legs. A shoe or ankle boot completes the autumn look. Layering provides interest, keeps us modest and most importantly helps deal with our fickle climate.

Secret to looking and feeling younger

E

veryone has heard of collagen. Probably our first exposure to it was through Hollywood magazines filled with stories of the rich and famous rushing to get their collagen treatments to look young and beautiful. Thanks to Hollywood, collagen has gained some status as a quality beauty treatment that works. But, as Health2000 in Merivale know, this doesn’t have to be a product exclusive to the Hollywood A-listers. NeoCell has recently launched their collagen range into the New Zealand market and their Super Collagen+C Type 1&3 is a breakthrough formula, as it provides over five times more collagen per serve than any other collagen brand currently on the New Zealand market. Collagen supplementation is one of the most fundamental things people can do to prevent premature ageing and promote youthful vitality. Understanding collagen begins with knowing that it is truly the glue that holds the body together; it’s the building block for all our body’s major system. Although abundant in our youth, the body’s natural collagen production typically slows after the age of 25. As this collagen production slows, the collagen fibres in the body become brittle and begin to break down resulting in many of the tell-tale signs of ageing such as loose, flaccid skin, wrinkles, ligament and tendon injuries and osteoarthritis. Super Collagen +C utilises Collagen Types 1&3, which is 90% of the body’s total collagen supply and the main collagen consistent in the skin, hair, nails, ligaments, tendons, bones and muscles. Each tablet contains 1,000 mg of Collagen Type 1 &3. Three tablets taken twice daily will provide the specific amino acids necessary to replenish the body’s collagen supply and help support radiant skin, thicker hair and stronger nails. Since this product has a very low molecular weight, it allows maximum absorption and utilisation by the body. Typically people taking NeoCell will

With the 250g tablet pack (that has a recommended retail price of around $54), NeoCell offers a more affordable and effective alternative to looking and feeling younger. In the Maori language, “kia kaha” means “staying strong”, and this is the positive message that Clare has set out to convey to both children and adult readers of her inspirational books.

T

his is the opening verse of “Kia Kaha's Brand New House”, the second children's book by Clare Erasmus about the experiences of a mouse that survived the Christchurch earthquakes and, through its extraordinary resilience, is now witness to the city's rebirth. In the Maori language, “kia kaha” means “staying strong”, and this is the positive message that Clare has set out to convey to both children and adult readers of her inspirational books. Published a year after the 2011 earthquake, the first book, “Kia Kaha, the Cathedral Mouse”, describes the destruction of Christchurch's most iconic building and then follows Kia Kaha as he realises the extent of the damage but also sees “how people went on with their lives and began to witness how a city survives!” In “Kia Kaha's Brand New House”, the mouse is excited to learn of the proposed erection of the Transitional Cathedral – better known as the Cardboard Cathedral. He checks out all aspects of this unusual building and moves in with his family: “Off he marched to his new

Fit for a king and just right for a mouse.” Clare explains that the second book looks at the community's attitudes to change, as typified by the Transitional Cathedral. Kia Kaha, however, sees Japanese architect Shigeru Ban's plan for a temporary place to pray as “the best news today!” Through Kia Kaha's eyes, we look at the physical changes around town, the old and new landmarks. He talks about Latimer Square

and the nearby 185 white chairs placed together in memory of people who lost their lives. “Kia Kaha also realises that, morally, you must always say thank you to the people who have helped you,” says Clare. The second book was published just before the arrival in Christchurch of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their son, Prince George. Clare was given the opportunity to meet them and present them with a copy. “Prince William and Kate were really intrigued by the perseverance and community strength

of the people of Christchurch,” says Clare. “They were also delighted to receive the book for Prince George, They loved the mouse as the main character and talked about who should read the book to their son first.” A teacher at Cathedral Grammar School, which is also attended by her 10-year-old son, Joshua, and five-year-old daughter, Jessica, Clare has a strong relationship with the cathedral. Joshua is one of 14 boys from the school who sing in the church choir there. To purchase the books, contact Clare at: conradclare@vodafone.co.nz.

Cake

Have your by Majka Kaiser

E

veryone loves cake. And what is a special occasion without cake to celebrate? According to ancient Roman tradition, bread was broken over the bride's head to bring good fortune to the wedded couple. sssssssssssssssss

In Medieval times a layered wedding cake was built as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over, and as the history books suggest, if they managed to kiss each other over the top of the towering cake they were guaranteed a fruitful life together. This in turn was re-interpreted by a French pastry chef who created the 'Croquembouche' (meaning 'to crunch in the mouth') which comprises a profiterole pyramid encased in a web of spun caramel. During the 17th to the early 19th century it was commonplace for a glass ring to be placed in the “bride's pie” and whichever unmarried girl found the ring was the next to marry. Eventually this meaning was attached to the catching of the bride's bouquet. The “bride's pie” soon became the “bride's cake”, traditionally the fruit cake, which symbolised fertility and prosperity. In the 17th century there were two layers; one for the groom and one for the bride, which had white icing symbolising virginity and purity. At the beginning of the 20th century pillars between the layers were introduced and amusingly were made from broomsticks covered in icing! This method was ground breaking at the time, and is a method still used today, but the internal structure is supported by dowels instead of broomsticks! My parent's generation had the traditional fruit cake, with one layer put aside for the christening of their first child. Fast forward to the 21st century and anything goes. In fact, the more adventurous one is, the more

and eat it too

Speaking with local Cake Queen, Anna Worthington, I discover a whole new generation of adventurous wedding couples who are turning their backs on tradition and embracing weird and wonderful flavours that surprise and delight the palate.

contemporary it's considered. The focus is less centred around one wedding cake, with some couples opting for an assortment of different cakes and sweet treats to appeal to all tastes. Speaking with local Cake Queen, Anna

Worthington, I discover a whole new generation of adventurous wedding couples who are turning their backs on tradition and embracing weird and wonderful flavours that surprise and delight the palate. Never considered pear and parsnip cake? What about orange fennel blueberry, raspberry white chocolate, or lime blueberry elderflower? While those of us who attend the Saturday Farmer's Market at Riccarton Bush, will be intimately familiar with Anna's wild cake concoctions, some may not be aware that many of her cakes - some who attest to their “crack-like effect” - are healthier than most. Using unrefined sugars in natural ingredients like date puree or honey, means you can still get your cake fix without the inevitable sugar crash. So if you're looking for something a little left of centre for your wedding, birthday party, or to take to a dinner party, you can't go past Cakes by Anna.

Happily

Ever After or not? One womans ’ tale...

By Majka Kaiser

I

t's every little girl's dream: meeting Prince Charming, getting married and living happily ever after. Isn't it? Well that's how the fairy tale goes, doesn't it? sssssssssssssssss

It doesn't say Cinderella practiced love and compassion towards her slave-driving stepmother and realised the real meaning of inner peace and true happiness, which would ultimately protect her no matter what life threw her way. Of course not. It taught generations upon generations of women that if we put on our sexiest party dress we will bewitch a handsome man who will valiantly rescue us from ourselves. I know, I know. I hear you scoff, “That's ridiculous. I'm a modern woman. I have my career, my friends, I don't need a man to be happy. Of course none of us would ever admit to ever having fallen for that damsel in distress malarkey - not to anyone else, let alone to ourselves - but ultimately this is what we all subconsciously hope for. Ask yourself this then: am I constantly disappointed when a relationship doesn't work out? Am I comforted when I seek solace in my partner, but ultimately left feeling empty and deflated when problems arise? If only my partner

I had unwittingly fallen victim to falling in love with the fairy tale.

Fiona Andersen Photography (couple) would behave in such and such a way, then I'd be happy. This takes some serious heartfelt soul searching and unadulterated honesty with ourselves to peel back all our neurosis and societal conditioning to reach the core of this delusion we so desperately grasp onto and is the cause of so much of our suffering. I'm going on 36 and have been married once, which didn't work out for all the above reasons. I was 24, on the verge of stepping out

into the big wide world after eight solid years of study. I was embarking on a promising career as a professional opera singer and a tall, dark and handsome stranger had just entered my life. Naturally, like any young woman has learnt from the beginning-less time, this was the moment all the pieces magically fall into place. I had arrived. I had found happiness. Not only did he physically fit the part, he had the credentials to match; a lawyer and a highly successful one at that. Happiness had arrived,

Anna Munroe Photography (little girl) neatly packaged just as I had envisaged, just as I had been promised. Four years later I woke up to myself and realised the misery I felt was completely of my own creation. I had unwittingly fallen victim to falling in love with the fairy tale. How cowardly had I been in handing over the responsibility of my happiness to this person and then feeling bitterly disappointed when he didn't automatically solve all my problems. Now I'm certainly not advocating that we should all commit to a life of celibacy or abstain from a relationship until we have found true happiness - for this is a lifetime's journey - but that we wake up from this fairy tale, be brave and take responsibility for rescuing ourselves.

hat makes Martinovich Exceptional Jewellery special is that nobody else is doing what they do. That, and the fact that the jewellery truly is exceptional.

our wedding gown is the most beautiful and yet the most nerve-racking item of clothing you will ever purchase. So be honest about your style and your body, when making your gown decision; it is the one time you most need professional guidance. The photos and memories are forever, so take your time, enjoy the journey and be sure of your decision. The latest wedding gown fashion shows are featuring a translucent effect, which reveals the beauty of lace or sheer embellishments against the skin, providing a soft feminine look, chic, classic and yet it can be very modern. Coupled with a chiffon skirt softly falling from the waist, to give a relaxed style, or with a sculptured body shape for more regal and formal styling, the effect is stunningly beautiful, giving photographic depth and light to your overall design. Accessorise carefully, simple in the first instance, adding full jewellery, veil and hair to complement a more formal wedding. Little Creatures IPA arrives in NZ

CocktailChef

The

Y

Mary's mixologist

ou know the old saying - all good things come to those who wait; well, that certainly can be said for the new Little Creatures Indian Pale Ale, which was launched in New Zealand recently.

Richard Uttley, Food & Beverage Manager at the Rydges Latimer reveals the secrets behind making a delicious Green Tea Daiquiri… Like the Margarita and most classes of cocktails, the original Daiquiri is a sophisticated mix of spirit, citrus and sugar, not some slushy frozen fruit bomb. It's not a sin to substitute, or augment with other fruit juices (Hemingway favoured grapefruit in the mix), but it might be to stir the recipe rather than shaking it to glorious epiphany.

Made with fresh hop cones, the Little Creatures team across the ditch has craftily conjured up this perfectly balanced 6.4% IPA that combines passionfruit and grapefruit aromas with a big, long bitter finish. Richard Uttley

How to make a Green Tea Daiquiri… Glassware As times change glassware moves on, the majority of bars, don't have the space to carry glassware for every drink, causing the daiquiri glass to slowly drift into history. Personally I prefer to use a champagne coupe, purely down to presentation. (Available from Total Food Equipment) Mark Scown, Craft Brand Manager, says: “The bunch of mates who first bought us Little Creatures Pale Ale some 15 years ago, have done it again with this new, flavoursome and eagerly awaited IPA. At 6.4% Little Creatures fans will definitely notice a considerable step up in flavour and we can't wait for Kiwi fans to try it.” The new Little Creatures IPA will join the existing range of Little Creatures Pale Ale, Pilsner and Rogers – mid strength amber ale. Little Creatures IPA is available at Liquor King, selected specialty liquor stores and bars around the country.

Recipe 45 ml of Havana Club Añejo 7 Años 10 ml of sugar syrup 15 ml of lime juice 1/4 spoon of green tea powder Pour all the ingredients into a shaker. Add crushed ice. Shake and pour into a champagne coupe.

Bloody Mary's is now online so check out www.bloodymarys.co.nz where they will be publishing all the Mary's Mixologist recipes on their site for easy reference.

Beautiful, unadulterated, delicious breads and pastries B read is perhaps the most widely consumed food in the world, offering most wonderfully creative variations.

Through creative incorporation of a wide variety of edible substances, scientific and technological advances since Neolithic times have allowed the production and quality of bread to increase greatly. Bread has many forms, is found in every culture and is still enjoyed daily in most ancient simplicity. And if bread really is the staff of life, then the offerings at Breads of Europe truly are like manna from Heaven. When one goes to the supermarket today, we see a bewildering list of chemical additives listed on bread wrappings, apparently to enhance flavour and prevent spoiling. This scenario is not the case at Breads of Europe. Its bake house shop at 10 Garlands Road offers fresh artisan bread baked seven days a week along with extras such as Danish pastries, pretzels, cheese sticks and a range of mouth-watering delicacies, as well as hot roast meat sandwiches which are perfect for cold winter’s days. The bread is beautiful – unadulterated delicious breads and assorted pastries made in the old-fashioned way, using only nature's grains and foods. They are also currently selling a limited number of “Team Cycle kit” kits. Be in quick while there are still some left! Breads of Europe is HACCP (New Zealand Food Safety Authority) registered which

means that the classiest of institutions can order from them with complete confidence that they are getting the highest quality product. Breads of Europe will deliver to cafés and retailers and is a one-stop shop which means that you don’t need to source different breads from different bakers. Certainly the range is massive: different white breads including focaccia and ciabatta, dark sour doughs – caraway seed, farmers’ bread loaf, gassenhauser, rye and yoghurt bread. You

Revel in a little joie de vivre

P

eter Edmonds of JDV in the Merivale Mall off Aikmans Road, explains that the letters stand for joie de vivre, a French phrase often used in English to express cheerful enjoyment or an exultation of spirit. What a perfect name for such a perfect combination of hospitality, great food and wine, sophistication and warmth. “Restaurants like this one often follow trends, as fashions and the needs of the public change,” says Peter. “But right now we are back just where we started – back to the original values encapsulated in the JDV name.” The décor is alluring and interesting: somewhat minimalist and uncluttered, with high ceilings lending a graceful roominess as well as quiet and more intimate alcoves. The seating varies from sit-down dining to bar stools, to bench seating and a pleasant outdoor environment complete with sails. This means whatever your needs: after-work drink, romantic tête-à-tête, a business meeting, enjoyment of good food and wine, or a family gathering – you can be comfortably accommodated in restaurant, bar and cocktail lounge; and you could be reluctant to leave. There is excellent parking, a north-west aspect, and you are close to the mall itself without it intruding in any way. The menu is well-constructed and immaculately prepared. Sample breakfast with

bacon, pork sausage, roast tomato, potato gratin, (free range) eggs, and sourdough toast; or perhaps bruschetta with caprese salad, poached eggs and hollandaise with grilled chorizo or smoked salmon. Lunch? Start with duck liver parfait, cornichons, cucumber pickles and baguette (a JDV classic!), and if you want something light, then the chicken, pork and pistachio terrine, stone fruit relish, more cornichons, smoked butter, and ciabatta might do the trick; and if you are really hungry, well there’s the roast beef fillet, duck fat potatoes, mushroom gratin, cress salad, and red wine jus. Come back for dinner and be tempted by Banks Peninsula lamb rack, ratatouille, potato

terrine, goat cheese beignet and minted pea puree. JDV really does seafood extremely well – king salmon, seafood linguini, market fresh fish and in season…oysters to die for! The menu is varied and well-described. JDV is one of those places where you look at the dishes being brought out from the kitchen and hope that yours, when it arrives, looks just as delicious.

Desserts you may ask? How could you turn down, served with quince paste, candied walnuts, falwasser crackers and toast, a New Zealand cheese like Whitestone Lindis Pass brie, silky and smooth, buttery like clotted cream with a caramel nuttiness giving way to an earthy mushroom taste? How could you keep your spoon away from a stone-fruit tartlet with vanilla mascarpone, Italian meringue and lemon and passion-fruit ice-cream? Well, you are just going to have to go along and enjoy JDV the way it was intended, and relish the flair and imagination it exudes. Joie de vivre, and bon appétit!

Rustic, peaceful setting divine dining

nce Morgans Vineyard to many people, Dine Divine has evolved into something remarkably different and quite spirited. Nadine Attinger explains that the concept has evolved.

“We have completely re-invented the décor,” she explains. “The make-over incorporates new lighting, carpet, a paint renovation – even a ceiling rejig. The whole atmosphere is brighter and more open-plan. “We have decided to make the environment warm, accessible, and truly a destination for many Christchurch people.” It is working. Any visit reveals a collection of groups of people enjoying themselves – an escape from suburban Christchurch that is really not very far from home, but takes you into a rural environment down Buchanan’s Road – a rustic and peaceful ambience. There is plenty of parking, and on a fine day you can dine outdoors. If you have a group to please – sports, family, office or friends, then this is the perfect spot for a getaway. “We don’t, like other places, charge a hiring fee,” says Nadine. “We aim to fit in with the needs of any group, whether it is a carefree youthful mix, or a gathering of older folk needing a quiet meal and good company.”

The menu is a clever fusion of the familiar and exotic. The idea is that if you need to plan a gathering, then Dine Divine will help you plan something special, without it being expensive. All the food is not only sourced locally, but prepared on site, so that you are truly ensured a bite of local produce, organic, free range, and delicious. While you can enjoy the best of imported selections you can also sample local Lone Goat and Tressillian wines. Even the unique and delicious ice cream is prepared right there. Every aspect of what Dine Divine does

concentrates on excellence. “We even make sure that we put just as much effort into the children’s menu as we do into the adults’,” says Chef Steve Dirs. “No fobbing them off on sub-standard chips and chicken nibbles!” Groups of up to 45 can be catered for, and the venue is open from 10am through to 11pm. The menu is a clever fusion of the familiar and exotic. We all may be used to Eggs Benedict, omelettes, and pancakes for breakfast, but why not try Plum and Frangipane Pithivier (two disks of puff pastry, with filling stuffed in between)? The seafood chowder, chunky and tasty, is rapidly getting a reputation, and appears twice on the menu – a great starter before you enjoy confit pork belly, braised red

Finish with chocolate and chilli tart, blackcurrant ice cream and hazelnut praline cabbage, parsnip puree, spiced apple chutney and cider jus. Finish with chocolate and chilli tart, blackcurrant ice cream and hazelnut praline, or maybe the cheesecake, which changes from day to day and never fails to surprise and delight. This place is refreshing to the mind as well as to the palate. Take time to drive out – it is not far really – and well worth the trip. As Nadine says, “People tell us so often that they are going to come back.” That says it all.

A ‘must stop’ country cafe & restaurant

F

or many of us the Blue Duck at Motukarara is something of an icon. As we loop around the roads heading towards Akaroa or over Gebbies Pass to Lyttelton the Blue Duck is just like an oasis – offering a breathing space on the journey.

Over the last year Sheffield born chef Glen Swift has breathed new life into the café. Glen was London trained and after twenty years of international experience this multiaward winning chef took a position as head chef at Christchurch’s Tiffanys. So why do we find a highly trained, award winning chef of Glen’s calibre at Motukarara? “The place has so much potential,” he says with a grin.

RETAIL STORE

Open Monday to Friday 8am till 5pm Saturday 9.30-3pm

“It gives me the opportunity to create something of my own and to put my own ideas into practice.” This makes sense. For a start the Blue Duck sits on a travel hub. With growth occurring in places like Akaroa, including visits by cruise ships, the road past the Blue Duck is a busy one. Add in the races at Motukarara and hungry punters, the annual

influx of summer holiday makers, busloads of tourists and you have a busy café. And let’s not forget the locals who come from a wide area – they come back; they treat the Blue Duck as their own rendezvous point. There is cabinet food available and a blackboard menu, with reasonable prices and nothing brought in ready-made. This menu has a range of all-day breakfasts and a variety of options. The home-made breads are simply magnificent – focaccia and sourdough – this healthy originality gives Blue Duck a wholesome uniqueness. Glen makes changes each week so that there is always a delicious freshness about the menu. Another change is Friday night dinner, including tapas and a casual dining menu. Another plan is the creation of a garden specifically designed to provide fresh produce. Next time you pass through, call in and enjoy.

Café favourites & new taste tempters

C

risp Cafe in the Fendalton Village Mall is increasingly popular with locals and has a growing influence with interest groups who enjoy meeting somewhere with a spacious and friendly ambience and great food and coffee. Owner Kal started out with a small cafe in the CBD. She has re-established herself and hasn't looked back. "The difference is amazing," she says. "Having space is wonderful, and a good kitchen means that we have control over the standard of our food." All the food you see there is produced on the premises, and in these days of healthconscious dining it is refreshing to know that what goes into the food is healthy and nutritious. The Crisp menu evolves with the seasons and a new menu is currently being rolled out. Kal also takes notice of what customers say. "We like to stick with dishes people really like, and also experiment with different food and run with suggestions. "That way our customers know their favourites are there, but there is always something different to try. "We also have an extensive range of glutenfree items." Crisp provides an all-day brunch - from 7.30am until 2pm, lunch from 11.30am - 2.30pm and the option of light meals. Opening hours are 7.30am - 4.30pm weekdays and 8.30am 4.30pm weekends.

Old favourites are there, such as toasted muesli, porridge, Egg Benedict, pancakes and a belt-straining Grande Breakfast. The creamy mushrooms are a treat - sautéed in creamy red wine sauce on grilled ciabatta. Lunch favourites include open sirloin steak sandwich and seafood chowder. Kal wonders why the American club sandwich is so popular toasted bread with roast chicken, bacon, cucumber, tomatoes and fried egg with chunky fries - but maybe the question has just been answered it tastes so damned good! Meat used is top quality and sourced from Meat@Millers, just across the road - a perfect arrangement with mutual benefits. Coffee is "Underground" meeting Crisp's service ethos. "It doesn't matter who the customer is," she says. "They all deserve respect and to feel comfortable being here." This means she is very much in a training role with her staff, takes to heart any comments made to her about the cafe, and is always looking to improve. Call in and enjoy a home cooked snack and a delightful coffee served by well-trained baristas - there is ample parking, and the mall is in many ways a bit of a hub, and easily accessible. "Hospitality is all about customers," says Kal.

Liberty Market Healthy diets emphasise fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean animal proteins, like chicken and fish, and low-fat dairy; and discourage overconsumption of red meat, trans-fats and saturated fats, sugars and processed foods. Most of us have over the past few years become more interested in just what is in the food we eat, and often make changes accordingly – provided we can obtain the right products. This is why a visit to Liberty Market on the corner of Moorhouse & Fitzgerald Ave is a real eye opener. This is a one-stop shopping convenience for all your organic food needs. It has grown from a small shop to a new 10,000-square-foot store today with an on-site organic bakery. It provides over 8,000 products from fresh fruit and vegetables, breakfast cereals, rice and beans, meat and eggs, to personal care, baby care, cleaning products, gardening, pet food, and bulk foods. Liberty Market is 100 percent Kiwi owned and the only certified organic retailer in the South Island. One of its aims is to “empower people so that more can enjoy the benefits of organic food.”

Il bello della pizza Misceo, on the corner of Ilam and Clyde Roads, is a little slice of rustic Tuscany transplanted into suburban Fendalton. Established in 1995, Misceo has taken a roadside corner and created an oasis – a mix of dining options – al fresco and intimate, bar type and group friendly, or just a great place for a coffee and a snack away from work. The food is beautifully prepared. The pizzas are exquisite – chicken, cranberry and brie, or Italiano, Indienne, Roast Pork, Lamb and Mint, Meat Lovers, Smoked Salmon – they are all served on an authentic crispy base that is as different from other outlets as Mars is from Jupiter. “There is always the smell of great food in here,” comments duty manager Katie McKee. She is right. Apart from pizza, there is soup, pasta, and bar snacks ranging from breads and paté to platters. Enjoy the weekly changing craft beers, good wines, and sample fish of the day or a really good pasta. Call in soon. Bring the children as there is a great menu designed for them. Plan for a group outing. Sample Mountain River venison on wood smoked kumara – it is all so, so …delizioso!

Café Metro Sometimes we need to keep an eye out for new places – eateries which have sprung up in places desolated by the earthquakes, and which have kind of 'snuck up' on us. On the Cranford St, Westminster St intersection there has been a small mushrooming, and a new event is Café Metro. It looks quiet from the outside, but you will be surprised at how busy it is once you step in off the street. The layout runs from inside casual and quiet, to sunny al fresco and there is more space than you would expect. There is no menu. You simply select from an extensive range of cabinet food and have it prepared if there is a need for it. Enjoy baguettes, omelettes, quiche, frittata, savouries, Spanish rice salad, beetroot salad, Caesar salad, slices, Danish, biscotti, cakes, muffins, brownies – there is an impressive range, and you can enjoy a hot drink or take your time with friends over a good wine for lunch. It is conveniently on the way in and out of the city, and the perfect relaxing space for locals.

Nestled comfortably in the heart of the town, just 15 minutes south of Christchurch, Lincoln Motels is a stunning and luxurious motel designed to the highest of standards. Just two years old, no expense has been spared when it comes to guest comfort, but that’s not surprising when you meet its owner managers, Craig and Colleen Beswick, who run the establishment. Friendly and hospitable, the couple had run motels in Nelson and Hanmer before building the Lincoln Motels from scratch. “We love meeting new people,” Craig explains. “This industry allows us to meet people from all walks of life and from all around the world.” “We bring professionalism and high standards to the industry,” Colleen says.

House of the Year judges on the road A new home in Christchurch and a renovation in Wellington were recognised as NZ's top properties last year. The Supreme Award for the Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year was awarded to Phil Benton Builders for this home in Merivale.

The Canterbury area has seen a 29% increase in entries from 2013 reflecting the completion of homes throughout the rebuild.

J

udges across the country have hit the road to assess this year's talent in the Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year.

Travelling from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South, judges will scrutinise 317 houses across New Zealand before regional event winners are announced in July and August. Ranging from new homes and show homes to renovations and builder's own homes, judges will assess the work of hundreds of builders to find the finest houses in the country. Registered Master Builders Association chief executive Warwick Quinn says the quality of the competition is the reason for its ongoing success. “Registered Master Builders continue to enter the competition year after year because winning a House of the Year award is a fantastic tool for promoting their business,” he says.

“Builders tend to work within smaller teams, and don't often get the chance to compare their work to that of others. House of the Year gives them the opportunity to see how they measure up against their peers.” The Canterbury area has seen a 29% increase in entries from 2013 reflecting the completion of homes throughout the rebuild, with entry increases also in the Auckland, East Coast, Manawatu and Wanganui and Southern regions. Mr Quinn says even after more than twenty years of House of the Year, the competition is still a calendar highlight for Master Builders. “It's fantastic to see work of such high quality from entrants every year. We're looking forward

to seeing what this year will bring,” he says. “We're proud to manage a competition that encourages those working in the building and construction industry to keep striving to be the best they can be.” Judging concludes at the end of May, before the first regional events in the East Coast and Southern regions on 5 July. The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, James Hardie, GIB, Nulook, MBIE, Future-Proof Building, Carters, ITM, Plumbing World, Resene, Westpac and Master Build Services. For more information about the competition, visit the Registered Master Builders website at www.masterbuilder.co.nz.

Infrared saunas provide many health benefits

F

ar-infrared saunas have multiple proven health benefits. Not long ago on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show, Dr Oz shared with an audience of millions how these saunas are the ultimate detoxifiers and can also improve circulation, lower blood pressure, increase metabolism and weight loss and relieve pain. Added to that, they are a wonderful way to relax. We are not talking about conventional saunas that use water and hot air, but about saunas that use infrared rays that penetrate deeper into your body. You wouldn’t think about putting a conventional sauna in your bathroom or bedroom, but you can do just that with the one or two-person far-infrared saunas that are no bigger than 1m x 1.2m, which simply plug in to the electricity supply and don’t require plumbing. Where can such saunas be obtained in New Zealand? Through the website of Infrared Saunas NZ – www.infraredsaunas.co.nz. Owner Asano Idour has first-hand experience of the benefits of using a far-infrared sauna. She had had several health issues over a couple of years when, near despair, she heard about far- infrared saunas. Being Japanese she was familiar with the idea of using farinfrared in health treatment, particularly for

pain relief. That started her on a path of research and investigation into the technology and into the most important facts to consider when choosing an infrared sauna. The result was the importing of a two-person cedar-clad IYASHI Infrared Sauna for herself and her husband. After using the sauna Asano’s health began to improve and the seed of a new enterprise to import and market far-infrared saunas in New Zealand, was born. “It was my hope that many people in this country might enjoy life with better health, with less pain and with fewer toxins. I believe there are very good reasons for choosing our

Not long ago on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show, Dr Oz shared with an audience of millions how these saunas are the ultimate detoxifiers and can also improve circulation, lower blood pressure, increase metabolism and weight loss and relieve pain. Added to that, they are a wonderful way to relax.

infrared saunas over other brands. First of all the IYASHI saunas have heaters produced using nano-carbon technology from Japan. This means they have a high infrared output and a desirable therapeutic frequency range. They also emit very low levels of EMF (Electro Magnetic Field). Secondly the heaters in our saunas cover a large area, but are positioned low to ensure the optimum use of the electricity supply. Also, all our saunas have floor and calf heaters as well as open design heater guards so that the infrared projection is not blocked.” IYASHI infrared saunas are available in cedar, basswood and hemlock and are very reasonably priced. There is even a portable lie-down model called the IYASHI Meta-System. These are on special until the end of May. Infrared Saunas NZ deliver nationwide. Delivery times are specified on the very comprehensive and informative website. Besides their website you can call for information on their Freephone 0800 21 80 20 or email info@infraredsaunas.co.nz.

aura Ashley's new Operetta collection is pretty and romantic – perfect for country house elegance with a theatrical feel.

This is a traditional, rather grown up story with a new and beautiful palette. It is all about elegance with inspiration taken from a beautiful English country house and garden. The Show Time trend is interpreted in this story, such as decorative elements of Chinoiserie and pineapples, anything with a theatrical feel. There is also an aged patina to the look, with the use of gold, champagne and brass finishes. Stockist: Laura Ashley, www.laura-ashley.com.au.

Welcome addition: beautiful fabrics & wallpapers T here's change afoot at the Red House Design Store in Redcliffs - that delightful nineteenth house that is a landmark of the community. The Red House is a retail extension of Comber and Comber, the interior design consultants. That interior design business is in overdrive at the moment and needs more space. So the back-room downstairs space of The Red House will become an inviting and easily accessible place to look at beautiful

fabrics and to peruse wallpaper samples and bedding catalogues. Customers can also buy one-off designer cushions and lamps here or order them to be specially-made to fit a particular decor. With a qualified interior designer always on hand in the store to talk to customers about their requirements, making selections will be relaxing and enjoyable. The front room of the store will still have all the wonderful ranges of jewellery, homewares, candles, candlesticks and diffusers, wall hangings and picture frames. Anyone who buys something in the store will be put into a draw for a free interior design consultation in their home. Such a clever way of linking the two aspects of this business and the draws will take place once a month. Coming soon and something to especially look out for will be striking industrial-look accessories and lighting features from Bali. The Red House is open seven days a week from 10am – 4pm.

Beautiful boutique could be yours

I

n the Parkside Plaza at 333 Harewood Road there is an exquisite shop called Partridge and Pear. This boutique store has been the pride and joy of Paulette DeFillipi for a number or years, but now she feels the call of exciting new things to do and has put the business up for sale. It is certainly an attractive proposition with all the treasures it has to offer. Partridge and Pear's homewares are stylish and on-trend. Lamps with glass bases sit beside clocks of all different designs and sizes. Mirrors adorn the walls and reflect the beauty of vases and urns, ceramics and jugs, picture frames and art prints. But that's only a small part of Partridge and Pear's charm and uniqueness. Should customers be looking for jewellery or a handbag that is different and sure to attract envious glances, Partridge and Pear is the place. They stock Four Corners costume jewellery made in Christchurch, as well as Australian brands Punky B - vibrant and colourful - and Adorne – glamorous and versatile. There is still more to this surprising shop. In a baby section there is the organic Bamboo range of swaddling wraps and face washers, as well as natural fibre towels by Babu, selected for their softness against delicate skin. Partridge and Pear is open 9.30am – 5pm Monday – Friday and 10am – 4pm on Saturdays. Visit this absolute gem of a store or perhaps put in an offer for it. You will not be disappointed.

Outdoor power on Normans Road M

artyns on Normans Road may have new owners and a slightly changed name to “Martyns Outdoor Power”, but the quality of the business's products and of its service remain absolute priorities. The firm has been an institution in Christchurch for well over 60 years. The tradition of Martyns as a family-based business continues with Adam Joyce taking the reins backed by excellent family support. The team are concentrating on all aspects of outdoor power equipment now – from blowers, to chainsaws, from rotary mowers to ride-on mowers. They sell the complete range of the Scandinavian Husqvarna brand of outdoor power products – that's everything from hedge trimmers and garden tools right up to commercial-grade ride-on mowers and mowing systems. backed by over 300 years of engineering excellence. After all the first Husqvarna plant was established in 1689 as a weapons foundry. Martyns also stock Lawnmaster mowers and Countax ride-ons, said to be “so much more than just lawnmowers”. These machines are the preferred choice for gardens featuring large lawns, orchards, paddocks and slopes and are designed to cut and collect grass even in the wet. They are also extremely versatile – able to create the perfect striped lawn finish or tackle rough paddock grass. Martyns are no longer selling cycles and intend to use the freed-up space in their showroom to expand their range of garden products. Soon you will be able to buy water blasters and generators here, as well as specialised garden tools and the range of Gardena irrigation products. Martyns pride themselves too, on being specialists in the comprehensive and prompt servicing and repairs of all makes and models of mowers and outdoor power equipment. In the extensive workshop there are still the same skilled and experienced mechanics who have been with the firm for years. They can service not only townies' equipment, but also the tools and mowers of customers in the rural areas of Selwyn and Waimakariri. Martyns offer pick-up and delivery to all these areas. With winter knocking on the door, right now it is a very good time to have your mower serviced. Martyns are offering a 15% discount for the months of May – August. Martyns mechanics have no thought either of

neglecting their former cycle customers and will still service all makes and models of bikes, while the store continues to stock some of the most popular cycle accessories such as lights, locks and pumps. The mechanics are also happy to help customers with spare parts where available Martyns is located at 12B Normans Road in the Elmwood Village. They are open from 8am – 5.30pm Mondays – Fridays and from 9am – 2pm on Saturdays. Phone 355 9323.

Feel and see the latest home heating options W

ith all of the rebuilding going on around Canterbury, there is a huge demand for heating systems, and Steve Waring of Simply Heat, is adamant that heating systems should be a part of the original design process, rather than an afterthought. “It doesn't make a lot of sense, for example, to opt for a ceiling ducting system when the established house design does not allow for the space.” Simply Heat, with its expansive showroom at 95 Byron Street, in Sydenham near the Waltham Road overbridge, is a one-stop shop, showcasing all of the upmarket and cutting edge technologies in heating and stocking the largest range of heating appliances from leading brands in New Zealand. “No-one should make a decision about home heating until they have visited our showroom,” says Steve. “Simply Heat is a specialty shop for anyone looking for residential heating, whether it is space heating or water heating; where customers can view the various forms of home heating attractively displayed and operating and see exactly how they look and perform when installed.” And that is how it works. Forget the brochures and verbal descriptions – this is a place where you can feel and see the options in full working order. Simply Heat is not limited to one or two

brands. The company sells all forms and is quite unbiased as to what option will best suit your requirements. “If you are planning to rebuild, we will give you the best advice, whether it is gas fires, electric heaters, heat pumps, hot water heaters, solid fuel burners or central heating systems,” says Steve. Simply Heat has bulk buying muscle and that means that they can provide leading brands at very competitive prices. The showroom itself features attractively laid out fireplace displays and you enter through a stylish reception area with an amazing see-through gas fire. You can then walk through a series of interlinked mini showrooms, each dedicated to a different form of heating. Simply Heat is constantly bringing in new working models to please all tastes, from traditional to modern. Amongst the latest to arrive is the Riva Studio range from Stovax in the UK. These are clean air approved. Pre-heated,

Check out the Escea DX Series which combines a wide flame, up to five star efficiency, heat ducting technology and a smart heat control system. It looks great and performs efficiently. Ducted central heating is a great option – economical, as it takes the place of two or three heat pumps – with a zone control so that heating is not wasted on unoccupied

areas of the house. Underfloor central heating is a great way to go as well. Silent, unobtrusive, draft-free, it is an efficient way of maintaining an ambient temperature. Cleaning to the highest of standards M

y team and I clean with a touch of love,” says Taina Scur, owner and managing director of TopClean Services. “For us a client's house is an extension of our own homes and we want to do the very best job we can. Being happy in our work is key to the quality of our service.”

WHEN QUALITY COUNTS

Shane 021 796 555 e. shane@ainsworthbuilders.co.nz www.ainsworthbuilders.co.nz

That quality of service has quickly been recognised and word of mouth recommendations have accelerated. In just over a year and a half TopClean Services has grown from its beginnings specialising in builders' cleans, to now carrying out a full range of cleaning services – residential cleaning, commercial and office cleaning, window cleaning and carpet cleaning, as well as builders' cleans. Taina's dynamism, enthusiasm and drive are infectious and she leads her team of five by example. She will not ask them to do anything that she would not do herself. Before setting up her company she cleaned house for both Michael Hill and Sam Neill in Queenstown – homes that demanded the highest of standards. That is what TopClean now brings to all its work, along with its desire to go “the extra mile”. The number of builders' cleans is ramping up in Christchurch as more new or re-built homes are completed as part of the city's recovery. TopClean Services has extensive experience in this field working with builders, contractors and homeowners. They know how busy, messy and full of hazards building sites can be and have the necessary Site Safe accreditation and the requisite personal protective equipment. The members of the team are consummate professionals in this environment.

You can have this same professionalism in your own home for either a regular weekly or fortnightly clean or for a one-off spring or special occasion clean. TopClean dusts, cleans, polishes and organises kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces to make your home really sparkle. TopClean Services are also equipped to service all kinds of commercial premises such as offices, clubs, schools, shops, workshops, theatres or galleries. There really is nothing they can't clean and put the TopClean stamp on. Carpet cleaning is a recent venture for TopClean Services to complete their range of services. They have a brand new state-of-theart van and equipment as well as a strong man on their team to carry out this heavier work. Right now they have a promotion running for carpet cleaning. Give Taina a call on 0800 TOPCLEAN or email info@topclean.co.nz for a free no obligation quote per room. Taina will also quote for any other cleaning jobs you may have.

The big cover up... old furniture rejuvenated F

urniture is, when you think of it, basic to our existence – somewhere to sit, to lie, to sleep on, eat at, relax with, and admire. It is ubiquitous in all cultures and comes in a multitude of styles and colours.

It also gets worn with use. What happens then? It gets tossed away and replaced, or it gets repaired…re-upholstered. Paul Tainui, of Somerfield Upholstery at 10 Calgary Place in Hornby, has had 30 years of experience in upholstery, 10 years in business, and three years at the current premises. His advice on recovering furniture is vital and refreshing, as well as being for most of us, money saving. Most old furniture, and high quality new furniture, has a good solid wooden framework – “good bones” as Paul calls it, and this is important. Much new furniture looks great in the showroom, but within a year or two begins to look drab and somewhat saggy. This is because manufacturers have cut costs by using cheap timber and materials. It comes down to a simple question: should you recover the good solid framework you are being tempted to discard, and purchase something new? Paul explains that it actually costs less to

fall in

recover older furniture, and the added benefit is that it will then last many years longer than a cheap new purchase. It is a no brainer really. The wonderful thing is that you have the excitement of making your own fabric choice. He can also make small changes to design, so that, for example, arms can be altered or removed, springs replaced and facings changed. The result is really a brand new piece of furniture with the original sound wooden structure – something that will outlast much of what you will see in some furniture warehouses. An added benefit is that you can match your furniture to your décor and lifestyle. Paul will come to your house and present to you samples drawn from 900 designs, and offer possibilities that you may not have considered. Do you have pets? A young family? What are your favourite colours? Call in to Calgary Place and talk through the possibilities. You will be stunned by the way in which drab old furniture – lounge suites, chairs, squabs – can be completely transformed, and that includes leather coverings. Much of Paul's work is with domestic furniture, but he can provide innovative upgrades to commercial settings as well. His reputation and the quality of his workmanship is second to none.
